It was a specially trained kidney sniffing dog

OP used it correctly! Look it up. In North American usage, it means unperturbed or not disconcerted.

Be familiar with all usages of a word before you criticize others.

For OP whose DH was bitten by dogs (evne if just his shirt), why not call the police? That's a dog attack in my book.

An off-leash dog jumped on me and wrecked a $140 sweater. I asked the owner for his address and to send me a check and he just walked away.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You're lying. You're so crazy you're exaggerating/lying on an anonymous board. Pathetic. Get a life. Or better yet, get a dog--maybe then you could grow a soul, you worm.

Wow you have some major anger issues.

Hysterical, aggressive, american assholes. In europe and britain, dogs are welcome everywhere: libraries, cafe's, post offices, trails. Litigious, frightened, hysterical americans, whining about dogs jumping on them and ruing their $140 sweaters. It's really pathetic.

Because you're dumb and can't tell from obvious context what she meant? Life must be hard for you.

You're nothing more than a worm in a $140 sweater.

Yes, and my 2YO and 5YO don't deserve to be bowled over by a stupid excited dog. Why should animal's rights be put ahead of people? There are areas in the park that are off-leash - large fields to run in! I don't see why the trails need to be off leash too.

A 2 yo can barely walk on a trail. Carry him in a forward facing back pack--that's what we did when ours were that small. 5 yo can fend for themselves. The human race didn't come this far to coddle your weaklings.

Um, no. I will not carry my 35lb 2YO who can walk on his own.

People who get weirdly defensive and obsessive about their dogs are creepy. You love your dog - but it doesn't mean everyone else needs to. So keep it on a (non-retractable) leash.

Really? Because most 2 year olds are dodgy at best even on a sidewalk. They meander and or bolt off in wild directions at the slightest stimulus. I could see taking one to an open park, but trying to make progress on a trail hike in the woods with a walking 2 year old sounds like idiocy. They'd just go tearing off into the poison ivy.

. Christ, even NYC allows dogs off leash during specific times in Central Park. It's hard to believe DC folks are so conservative and...dare I say such pussies? Never had this problem in other cities or other countries. At least we do a good job cleaning up our dog's shit here. Try walking around Paris sometime.

We have dog parks in DC. There are plenty of places dogs can go off leash.

The UK has strict laws on dog behavior:

And on breeds:

You can walk your dog off leash in st. James, Hyde and Kensington park. These are formal green spaces with thousands of people. Stop freaking out about dogs and buy some Prozac

There are like 4 dog parks in Old Town Alexandria. I'm amazed at the entitled owners who *still* think it's ok to walk their dogs off leash or on one of those ridiculous 10-foot long "leashes" around the area.
