Off leash dogs in Rock Creek Park. What to say?

Can't stand people who let their dogs off-leash, and it's even worse when they think it's no big deal that their dogs are attacking/menacing/bothering people.

You pepper spray my dog and I will literally cold cock you on the spot.

Sure you will.

I do worry about someone spraying a dog and ending up in a violent situation with an owner.

Exactly.

I love running with him. If you tell a ranger, people never get caught b/c I swear there is a code. Everyone will know that a ranger is in the park in 30 seconds!

Then you are an idiot. First, shock collars are cruel. No decent dog owner would ever use one. Second, it's easy to run with a well-trained dog. We've had German Shepherds in our family for as long as I can remember. We have two right now. I run with them all the time - on leash. They are both super laid back, well-socialized, and they love people! They are well trained with excellent recall. I can call them with a "here" and they will stop and a dime and come to heel. But the family walking ahead of me has no way of knowing that. Why would I cause another person stress when a simple leash is all it takes for reassurance? I also have no way of knowing how another dog might react to mine. And how can you be sure you are picking up poop if your dog is running free?

Plus, it's agains the law. I really hope you get caught. Quite honestly, given your use of shock collar, you should like a shitty dog owner.

Shock collars are not cruel. We use it because we actually went to a hunting/hound dog trainer. They let us know that because it's nearly impossible to train the scent out of a hound, if we wanted our dog back, we would use one. You can't train a hound not to chase a deer or other prey. That is what they are bred for. You are the idiot.

Have you tried to run the trails with a freakin' leash??? I don't run off leash on the road or any where else, just inside the trails. People rarely get caught. There's a trail code and I swear it works.

So if the hound takes off does it respond to the vibration or shock? A trainer had one on a pit and it resulted in aggression just on vibration. If you cant run with a dog on a leash then you shouldn't be on the trail. People should recognize their limitations as well as their pets.

I'm one of the people who has an e-collared dog. Hound dogs of all kinds run off, that's a problem and I don't know enough about the breed to say if an e-collar would work. I would personally not run or walk off leashwith any kind of hound in an urban park like rock creek. I'd worry that I'd never see my dog again. And I am just biased against pits. I know they can be sweet but they are bred for violence and I would not allow them off leash either.

Hounds are bred to chase fox and small animals. They've done this for generations. Trainers now use shock collars. Hounds are called gun dogs. This is what they are bred to do - to run off leash. Geesh! Ever heard of fox hunting?

If off leash dogs are chasing my five year old child, your "trail code" isn't working, sorry. And no matter how well trained your dog is, if you have your dog off the leash you are working to encourage the behavior of other people who let their ill-trained dogs off leash. People see dogs off leash, and they think it is okay.

Sounds like none of you know a damn thing about dogs. First, I come from a family of hunters. I grew up with hunting dogs. We never used shock collars because they were well trained gun dogs.

Second, NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT HUNTING. Dogs that hunt aren't in public parks. Here's a little hint from someone who actually trains German Shepherds - If you can't run with your shepherd on a leash, then you fail miserably as a handler.

Whst does your family hunt? Gerbils? Every hunting I've seen in the last ten years trained with a buzz collar.

Hounds are not the same as spaniels, pointers, and retrievers. If I had a sweet snoopy PET NON HUNTING beagle I would not have it off leash. Plus I would have a barrier fenced yard. http://www.gundogmag.com/breeds/beagling-for-bunnies-choosing-next-rabbit-dog/ "process of training a rabbit hound requires large fenced enclosures stocked with semi-wild rabbits"

Vast majority of shock collars are sold to people who dogs for pets not for hunting. If some one is trying to punch you, you have a legal right to spray them. However, if you spray their dog just because it is near you and non threatening, you can be arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

Let me guess. Your daughter isn't treated fairly by her teacher. There is another kid in the class who is bullying your daughter. You dont really get along with the other Kim's in your play group. Etc...

+1 and you need to be careful with pepper spray, it doesn't always go where you want it to go. I witnessed a situation in a community park where a man was walking his dog and a boy was walking by with his mother. The boy had a stick and attempted to poke the leashed dog and it growled at the kid. The mother freaked out and sprayed pepper spray at the dog but along with spraying the dog she sprayed the dog's owner. The cops were immediately called and I played witness to what happened. The man with the dog was able to leave and the mother was arrested and I believe charged with assault.

No I was there. The dog own was arrested and the dog was put down.

No I was there too. The mom lost custody of the kid and the dog owner successfully sued her for $10 million. The kid was placed in a foster home.

Pepper spray dog. Take picture of owner (just to freak them out).

Don't say anything, just call the police. It's against the law, so there's no need to get into a debate with people about it.
