What is it about UVA that makes people so gaga

Anonymous
I don't know why anyone would go gaga about a school that has such a imbedded rape culture?

This is the understatement of the week.

True, but I found it too isolated! So, pros and cons.

First of all - its the Grounds and second of all it is The Lawn - the crowing jewel. Quad. As if.

Yes, I would be one of those alums. But, I never found it isolated. Given that I've always lived in major cities - having 4 years there was wonderful. Great college town. Lots of outdoor activities too.

And there's the reason DD would never want to go there. Too pretentious.

Yes! Their certainly is a pervasive arrogance at UVA. Don't ever ask a current student if she's a freshman, either. You'll get a snotty, immediate correction of "first year." So very self important and smug. This haughty attitude applies to parents of UVA students, too. They are quick with the UVA-specific lingo corrections and "name dropping."

I am old enough to remember when UVA students doctored their school's standard car window sticker. Instead of The University of Virginia only "The University" would go onto the window. Ugh.

YES! I remember this too. Though I thought the UVA bookstore must sell the stickers like that - didn't realized students did their own cut and paste job. How arrogant! Blech.

Any college that is dominated by Greek life is stunted.

Some racists + some spoiled kids + some rednecks + some sexually uninhibited frat boys + some snobs = UVA.

No, you can buy them like that at the bookstore. (I went to UVA. I hope my children won't.)

I'm glad you didn't get in.

Sadly, this is out of control at many colleges. Look at the Vanderbilt football players that will be going to jail after being convicted of raping a drunk girl. Their defense was that is the culture of campus. Everyone is drunk and promiscuous. If they had not taped the attack they probably would not being going to jail. Women are not safe around drunk men at college. I was reading the comment section on the USA article about the Vanderbilt conviction. Some guy commented that these "boys should not have their future ruined because it is just biological for them" Sick! And binge drinking just adds fuel to the fire. Vanderbilt has a very fratty culture just like UVA.

I turned down U. Va. twice (undergrad and law school), but the sniping on this thread is over-the-top and borderline pathological.

As a general thing, anything that gets disparaged as frequently as U. Va. does on DCUM probably is pretty good.

Agreed.

I got into Brown, Northwestern, and Cornell. I got rejected from UVA and WM. It's that competitive and it makes no sense, but I actually tell my nieces that they probably having a better bet at a lower-ivy, or private competitive college than landing at UVA. It's that weird.

This. Northern Virginia public high school students can always get into a higher ranked school going out-of-state or going private.
At all academic levels, whether it be Ivy admissions or alternatives to George Mason.
