| We are new to this area. My kids are in ES, but this school seems to come into almost every conversation I have with other parents. It is a state school, just like other state schools, right? I heard that it was only difficult to get into if you are out of state like UNC CH. Please enlighten me. Thanks. |

One of the top 2 best state school in the country duh

I think you misunderstood. It's incredibly difficult to get into UVa if you live in northern Virginia. There's so much competition here, pretty much only top students get in. |
|
UVA is ranked as one of the best public schools in the country (along with UNC and W&M, another VA state school).
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public I'm not sure where you're getting your info, but it's not very easy to get in, even in-state. Comparing to UNC-CH, it looks like UVA has a somewhat lower admit rate for in-state, and a slightly higher admit rate for out of state. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/does-uva-have-a-quota-for-northern-virginia-admissions/2013/11/25/559685ba-557b-11e3-835d-e7173847c7cc_story.html http://admissions.unc.edu/apply/class-profile/ |

It's also usually top 25 or so on the USNWR national list. It is not at all like any other state flagship.

| In State Tuition |
Are you new to the area, or the East Coast? |
|
Pros- In State Tuition
Good Academics Nice Campus Ranked Well Cons- Too Greek |
Wrong. Do you think it is comperable to say, the University of South Carolina or the University of Alabama? |
| It's Thomas Jefferson's University. |
|
It's very hard to get into. DD didn't get in, and she has great grades/scores. I think you need a hook, OOS, and DD didn't have one, aside from grades/scores.
The campus, designed by TJ, is lovely. I don't want DD going there, so it's for the best. It's very greek, kinda preppy, not quite the down to earth vibe that would suit DD. But it's a great school, so if your DC got in, congratulations!! |
| Besides rankings can somebody give a more organic view to why UVA is great? |
| If you visit, the campus is lovely, especially the quad. Although we live in MD and we're hoping DC will go to UMD, the campus just doesn't match UVA's campus. |
Looking at this link, it still looks like instate kids have almost a 50/50 shot |
No, they don't have a 50/50 shot, the acceptance rate for in-state is more like 40%. The thing to consider about that, though, is that it's become so tough to get in that your average student in Northern Virginia, who 20 years ago would have had a pretty good shot at getting in, isn't even bothering to apply anymore. It's mostly top students applying, and still only 40% of them (or less in some counties) are getting in. If you want odds closer to 50/50, you have to move downstate. Like it said in the WaPo article, 92% of a recent freshman class was in the top 10% of their class. Does that really not sound competitive to you? |
