What is it about UVA that makes people so gaga

No, UVA grads think it's equal to Berkeley or Michigan. It's not. They are delusional.

I get the sense that people enjoy putting schools just outside the top-tier in their place, reminding anyone who will listen that it's not HYP (says the Ivy grad) or that it's not Michigan or Berkeley (says the striving UCLA grad). It definitely isn't like other high-end publics when it comes to research dollars and pulling great faculty, but that arguably makes its ranking even more interesting.

In the end, there's a population who likes it and, really, that's fine. I'm not trying to scream can't we all just get along, but why is it so important to get anonymous people you don't know to admit that a shook you didn't attend isn't "really" that good?

Well said. NP with no skin in this game. It boils down to the haters needing to hate to mitigate their own insecurities. When people try so hard to put something down, it says much more about them and their issues than it does about the thing they're trying to step on.

This isn't about haters and insecurities. It's about the pretentious attitude of UVA boosters being off putting to people. It should say a lot that so many people start threads about this school. I haven't started any of these threads, but understand why people feel this way. And I say this as someone who thinks UVA is a good school.

It's a good school. It's not "very prestigious," "elite" or a "private Ivy."

It's an adequate school for the masses. And a great school for rich who want to signal their kid has a slightly above average IQ but can drink like a fish.

Provincial. And if you're not in a "top house" in Greek life you're a campus nobody. If you're a rich or gorgeous shoo-in for a top house, sure, go have a ball. If your kid is just going to be random nobody 1 of 30,000 do them a favour and pony up for a private college.

So much jealousy over UVA. So many of your kids are either social misfits to fit into or don’t have the grades and test tours to get into UVA. Or both. That explains why you hate UVA.

The campus is kind of anticlimactic and the retail/restaurant area is a little underwhelming.

The existence of smug snotnoses like you kind of explains it too.

The best thing about UVA is that it’s sooooo much better than UMD. No contest.

But it’s so true. The jealousy is over the top.

For this thread I think it is just one troll trying to make him- or her-self feel better and posting multiple times. Ignore whomever it is. They have bigger issues that aren't being addressed unfortunately.

What campus? It’s called “grounds.” Clearly your kid didn’t get in and you know nothing about the school.

This is a pretty typical DCUM exchange on UVA.

If you were a Harvard grad and someone commented that Harvard isn't prestigious, you likely wouldn't feel compelled to respond. It would be like water off a duck's back. UVA supporters feel compelled to respond, and it usually results in a fight.

UVA is a great school. The people who go there love it and are proud to have gone there. They don’t “Wahoowa” as much as Baka people say “roll tide,” but their enthusiasm for their school is similar.

You don’t have to like the school, but restarting yet another thread where people try to argue that it’s a bad place is ridiculous.

If it’s not for your kid, that’s fine.
