NP of course it's possible to be an atheist and still believe murder is wrong. One does not have to be religious to have ethics and morals. PS I do not kill mice or bugs, nor do I eat meat, and I also am an atheist.

No my logic and beliefs hold that I have a soul and my God has described murder of a human as a sin . If I were totally atheist I would logically conclude a mouse and human have equal universal value which is essentially nothing.

Yep. Without God and without souls ..logically , humans are no more valuable than cows , rocks , ants , fish or trees. There could be many who feel differently but it would be based on the selfish survival mechanism and have no validity in any unbiased and logical reasoning and there would be no logical reason for any guilt associated with any act.

Religion is believing your ethics and morals developed by your feelings are more valid than the values and ethics Hitler developed from his own feelings .

Only by the loosest definition as a world view. No god, clergy, scripture, or sacred history. The thread is about being an atheist, not being amoral or lacking ethics, though many religious people make that mistake.

I'd say that's flawed logic, at best. Humans are actually the entities most capable of those on Earth of creating concepts and artifacts that are unknown in nature and are dedicated to improving aspects of the world around them. People create connections with each other and have value to each other that is irrelevant to whether or not they have a soul.

Humans have created art, music, philosophy, tools and have made discoveries in math, physics, biology, etc.

Humans care for each other in an altruistic way that goes beyond selfish self interest and has nothing to do religion. People put themselves in harms way to search for and rescue lost hikers and children - and are not infrequently injured or die during the process. And yet, the next time it happens people volunteer and put themselves at risk, again.

Regardless of what you believe, humans - in and of themselves - create value in the universe and have value because of that.

OMG... That was the dumbest religion I have ever heard of. Humans add zero value to the universe and mostly leave destruction and fecal matter. Humans create nothing..,they stumble upon laws of physics , mathematics and science that have existed since the beginning of time. What a joke. There is order and physics that exist right now that we will never understand.

Not the OP, but another atheist. I am not "absolutely certain there is no higher power." Logically, it's very difficult to prove a negative, and to quote Voltaire, "While doubt is an uncomfortable position, certainty is a ridiculous one."

However, I do not affirmatively believe in a "higher power," and, in the absence of evidence demonstrating the existence of such an entity, I see no reason to conduct my life as if one exists. If someone provides scientifically testable evidence that a "higher power" exists, or if I end up in some kind of afterlife, I'll have to modify my belief structure.

There's no difference between my outlook on the monotheistic deity(ies) (as well as all other deities) and the way Christians act towards the Egyptian/Norse/Greek/Roman/pick an ancient culture of your choice pantheons.

OP here, I guess it's just a difference in how we define agnostic and atheist. The difference to me between atheism and agnosticism is atheism involves what a person does or does not believe and agnosticism involves what a person does or does not know. My life is driven by what I know rather than what I believe. And my thirst for knowledge is driven by what I don't know.

Of course there is a God..a clergy ..a scripture and sacred history and they are "your feelings". Even though logically you can see that your feelings are of no consequence in the universe , you revere and worship them anyway.
