OP - you did nothing wrong legally or morally. Helpful Helen didn't buy a house for you. Stop letting her tell you that and stop believing it. She will either find renters when you leave or she will sell. The clause about living there as their primary residence is true in terms of not paying fed taxes on the sale. (Less than 2 yrs you pay taxes on the sale).

I agree. The OP paid her mortgage for a long time, for God's sake. The OP should at least have given much more notice and perhaps have let Helen know that her husband was looking for work elsewhere. But this relationship was definitely mutually beneficial.

Next thing you know you'll be claiming that Op lived in that house out of the goodness of her heart and to help dear old HH. No. She didn't.

Both parties had selfish financial reasons for what they did. They were both getting some sort of personal gain out of the arrangement and to say this was all about "helping" each other is silly. If push ever comes to shove I'll bet they would not hesitate to throw each other under the bus. And Op is bailing while the bailing is good. Now that's a solid friendship.

I mean, to resist. But don't worry - as your good friend, I was sure to negotiate your tenancy with the new owner and they agreed (at my insistence!!) that they would allow you to stay for two more weeks.

Morally, yes, OP, you are in the wrong. For the favor HH provided to you the bare minimum notice should've been 3 months, but 6 months preferred. Your husband should've gone to Utah to start his job without you while you stayed on for the extra time so that HH could find new tenants.

The issue with posting in DC is this is an area with lots of rentals and a transient population. The answer you receive here would be completely different then if you live in a small town with limited rental market where the expectation is that people will live there forever. Here, she could just find new tenants, no issue. That is why you won't get a good answer here.
