GMU is ranked no. 1 as "up and coming university" in U.S. News & World Report. Have you ever visited? It's amazing. Engineering (all types), robotics, game design, computer science are all top notch and new facilities. The school is well-linked in with the Dulles tech corridor. The kids get internships and some are even paid to work on projects while still students. They get good jobs in the Dulles corridor.

This is why USNWR is irrelevant. The year Penn State has all these publicity troubles, Penn State somehow has the biggest jump ever on the rankings. What has gone up about the school, nothing. There must be some alumni working at USNWR or Penn State went begging for rankings.

I don't think "irrelevant" is the word you're looking for there. Though we may wish it to be true, USNWR is definitely not irrelevant.

These are different types of schools. Umd and Psu Gmu are research and hard science schools. The others are humanities and general education. Umd, Psu, Actually have higher rated business and journalism, medical and law schools than the others. Umd is the highest rated hard science school by far ARWU rated 25th in the US and 38th in the entire world. The Umd cp/Balt is 950 million dollars a year in research 3rd in the U. S.
Umd has 3 Nobel alumni , 8 Pulitzer alumni , 3 fields medal winners , 3 academy award alumni . And far more Nobel and Pulitzer faculty than any of the others.
Umd has 46 national championships . Additionally, alumni created/founded/invented the following:
