All decent schools.

Seriously, UMD at the top? I would put it at least under Penn State and GWU.

And what kind of DC native is going to rank American over GW???

UMD has improved a lot lately and that is reflected in admissions difficulty. Only AU and GWU on this list are more selective.

Maryland is considerably more selective than AU...

Not really. The SAT scores of accepted students are nearly identical at both schools and AU accepted 44% of applicants last year as compared to Maryland's 47%. Thus American is slightly more selective.

Depends where you're coming from. In state, UMD probably significantly less selective than AU. Out of state it's probably much harder to get in than AU.

Come on. Is it the same poster? The PENN is sort of driving me a little nuts.

I don't get it either. It's almost like a reaction to capitalizations like UVA or VA Tech or UMD. But PENN makes no sense--it's not an acronym or a postal designation. But apparently this affectation is promoted by the university: Check out the Penn State logo on the website:

Although it's only the logo--all the written text on the website refers to "Penn State." So please, can we stop with the PENN?

These schools are so diverse in terms of quality, size and rural vs urban. I would discuss with DS as PP suggests..what do you want out of college? What might you want to major in? If my kid has no clue...I will send him to NoVa for a year or so to clarify his thinking.
