Move farther west in Montgomery County if a decent school is important to you.

FYI, for "decent" read "white" or "affluent," because that's what this poster means. This is actually one of her less offensive posts.

I disagree PP. The poster is talking school quality. Either the quality of the school is high or low, regardless of race. If there is a high quality school that isn't, as you say, not the Poster before you, "white" or "affluent," I believe that school would be recognized as such.

Nope. This poster is well known for her views, and they all have to do with low SES and minority students. She conflates "low quality" with "low SES" and "black or Latino." Don't be an apologist for her, PP.

bullshit I have NEVER, EVER said anything about "latino" and black people etc. that is crap. I don't even know what SES means. You must have me confused with somebody else. Frankly, DD want in a full-on hispanic daycare (on purpose). And now because she has not started kindergarten yet, she is on a preschool that is, well, full-on another culture but not "white" and I prefer not to specify. And I am so done explaining myself on here. Again, to all you, stop talking about what you don't know about. You don't know shit. And frankly, you all DCUMer transplants are the WHITEST OF WHITE AS RICE people I have ever heard speak in my life. And you are such hypocrites. You read the New York Times or listen to NPR or whatever and get on here starting very tacky and uncomfortable discussions about race because you are so not diverse you don't even know how to speak. Yuck. I am so glad you mostly live in DC so I do not have to associate with you people. That's right - YOU PEOPLE, and I am referring to you DCUM transplant people.

Translation please.

Add forest knolls, Sligo creek, highland view to that

Another vote for Forest Knolls. I met with my child's long term substitute a month ago, she said she subs at 7 schools in Montgomery County and Forest Knolls is her favorite because the children are so kind and the culture of kindness at the school. And then I heard the same thing about a week ago from an Occupational therapist who knows the school system and has clients at different schools.

It gets Maryland Focus funds. There are 16 kids in my child's first grade class. Focus funds make smaller classes for K-2.

Add Montgomery Knolls and Pine Crest too.

Not fair unless you name them. Which schools mentioned aren't fine?

Zip codes that identify "Silver Spring" go nearly 20 miles north and east of what used to be traditional Silver Spring.

At your age with such a young family you should be thinking as far west and north as you can go in Montgomery County.

Yeah, live in the exurbs and spend all your time commuting

We live close to the Ho Co line - very close to Highland/Fulton - and I don't find my commute difficult. I work in Rockville. I have a friend who lives in Derwood and commutes to VA each day. Now that's a hike, but b/c she lives in a beautiful 'hood on 2 acres, she says it's worth it.

Some people like land. We do. I love the peace and quiet and wouldn't trade it for anything.

People here are very happy with elem options and Blair. I can't speak to the other DCC schools.

marginally better?

lol!

The only plus to Blair is magnet/CAP. That's what gives Blair its reputation. It's a school w/in a school, and b/c of the magnet - and now with the DCC (aka - school "choice") - there's no community. That's what happened to PB and Springbrook. The consortium destroyed the neighborhoods, especially with the addition of Blake, which has NO true home base.

Sherwood opted out of the consortium b/c they knew it would create fragmentation. It's bad enough that Rosa Parks has split articulation - as does Farquhar to some extent. But it has a better community than the NEC and DCC, which is what helps schools function.

So you can compare all you want about test scores and this and that. I prefer that my children feel as though they're part of a community. And having lived in the NEC and worked in an NEC "cluster," we realized that community just wasn't there.

There are people who live in northwest Montgomery County and don't work in DC! True fact!

(Another true fact: lots of those people who live in northwest Montgomery County look like people you might see in Mexico City or Lagos.)

OP said they specifically chose Silver Spring because it is convenient for her DH's work. Northwest Montgomery County would be quite a commute for him during rush hours. Or are we no longer answering the OP's question?

It is possible to get from northwest Montgomery County to downtown Silver Spring during rush hours without driving.

How do you know what race each individual poster on DCUM is? And where each poster grew up? And whether each poster lives in DC or outside of DC (Montgomery County, for example)?

Suppose your child doesn't get into the magnet program now tell me about the non-magnet Blair. Is it still a good school? What are the social and academic elements at Blair for non-magnet students?

I hear all this talk about great elementary school in SS. That's all find, but kids grow up and they can't stay in elementary school until college. Please tell those of us who are considering to relocate to SS the real deal. I don't want the sugar-coated PC version either. What's the deal with the middle and high schools in SS? I want parents and individuals who have actual experiences to respond. Please no deflecting or harboring about magnets. If Blair didn't have a magnet program will you send your child there?

When I look at the "School Safety and Security at a Glance" sections of certain schools in Montgomery County some of the schools really concern me as a parent.

The parents of 2,790 children actually do send their children there.

i would agree with the PP that the consortium idea has been bad for downcounty SS schools.

However, lots of upper middle class kids of professionals that i know in my neighborhood send their kids to nonmagnet Blair and are really happy with it.

People here are making statements without having experienced it.

I typed that into google translate and got this.

Did you actually send your child to Blair or teach there and therefore have 1st hand experience of it?
