Southeast prep/WASP culture

Good ol' boys from old plantation families who wear boat shoes and seersucker and pledged at a fraternity in a southern school. They're nice guys but sort of hilariously ignorant about minority cultures in the US (I'm Hispanic and I think they're shocked to see an upper middle class Mexican) and seem very exotic to me, like weird birds. Just like to hear more insight into this group of people. What are their childhoods like? What is their culture like? Do they basically just surround themselves with people like them?

They are dorks.

Southern Preps:

*Conservative politics
*Ladies want their MRS ASAP
*Live in a white person bubble
*Duke, Vanderbuilt, UVA

Northern Preps:

*Liberal politics
*Ladies want their MD, MA, MS, MBA or Ph.D
*Value diversity
*Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, Amherst, etc

Only publicly.

Simmons College is" Simmons Mattress", Pine Manor is" Pine Mattress", Scripps - "Scrippers", and don't forget Wellesley women going out for the night on the "_uck truck". Yes these highly educated wealthy good old boys, North or South love to demean others.

Funny. I went to a halloween party once where a guy showed up with a mattress tied to his back. He was a "Radford Girl". Not deep south but you get the point. Awful.

Exactly. I thought more people knew this. I guess they are not as "preppy" as they think.

People here self describe themselves as preppy and are *more* than happy to try to exclude others. But they have no idea what it really means.

Refer to the 80's preppy handbook for more.

I've known a 2 southern preppies who lost jobs and had to settle for something lower paying and less "impressive." Mommy and daddy could no longer give big handouts and *gasp* the trust fund wasn't as big as they hoped. It's kind of sad to watch, but beautiful when you see the metamorphosis. One became a bitter alcoholic who still dresses preppy. Another rose up from the plaid and khaki ashes and is actually doing something great for society and making a good living again. He gave up the whole prepster thing and is a pretty down to earth guy now.

I have also encountered many wannabe preps in the DC area. They are living above their means to drive the fancy cars , dress the kids in Ralph Lauren and pay tuition at the private school. Some even develop that preppy snooty voice

Northern Prep women:
*Obligatory undergrad lesbian phase
*failure to marry and reproduce at replacement rate
*practice classist feminism - feel entitled to establishment and non-profit type jobs
*elitists who will practice 'zoning for me but not for thee'
*white man's burden style do-gooding
*see private school forum on this site

The hell is a preppy snooty voice?

I am from the south and I'm not like this but have cousins who are. Don't see this type much in DC, are you with a southern firm?

Anyway, I would not let all the comments on this thread scare you away. I would take each individual as they come and judge them based on how they treat you and others. Just because they dress preppy and go to the Greenbrier doesn't mean they aren't nice people necessarily. However, I am scared to live in the south since I don't fit this mold.

+1 -- I also think there is lip service to diversity and many are fine with really poor diverse populations doing better, but I don't think they value diversity when it comes to professional equals -- lots of eye rolling at Asians making partner in biglaw or MD in I-banking even if they were born and raised here and have top credentials as they are viewed as "taking" a spot.

I went to Boston College and also that is a Jesuit school (like Georgetown), it was the exact same culture as the one described in this thread. Except that my office in DC is pretty diverse, and BC wasn't diverse at all.

Well, now I'm kind of curious to watch the Bravo show after reading this thread.

I was going to mention the capital club. They epitomize Southern male douchiness.
Also, is the Madison Club still going? The one where some member said they "future trophy wives"

It should go without saying that where someone grew up and how they dress doesn't equip you with enough information to make sweeping generalizations about that individual, much less an entire group.
