Southeast prep/WASP culture

Good ol' boys from old plantation families who wear boat shoes and seersucker and pledged at a fraternity in a southern school. They're nice guys but sort of hilariously ignorant about minority cultures in the US (I'm Hispanic and I think they're shocked to see an upper middle class Mexican) and seem very exotic to me, like weird birds. Just like to hear more insight into this group of people. What are their childhoods like? What is their culture like? Do they basically just surround themselves with people like them?

Racist much?

Its too bad they can't hear what a racist you are.

This PP says it all. Good luck, OP. Try to suppress the urge to vomit on their boat shoes. Preppy tools!

not racist. You are a total idiot. Yes white people are shocked by UMC or wealthy Latinos because they watch way too much FOX News.

I can't believe how small-minded these posters are. Making sweeping generalizations about a group of peopke is like assuming all black people are ghetto, thugs, lazy, etc.

Preppy tools are always assholes. Always.

Stop! I am white and agree this subculture is morally bankrupt.

I grew up with these types (went to a small Southern prep school), but because I'm Black, I never got too close emotionally. None of the guys showed any interest in me, even though I was voted to homecoming court and best looking my senior year. It didn't matter how attractive they thought I was, since I was Black I wasn't fit for dating.

Bro-y, entitled, conservative, and insular pretty much sums them up.

They often pulled strange, homoerotic stunts. Stuff like rubbing bengay on their balls, or changing into matching sweats and wrestling on the yard during lunch.

They are genteel, and very, very sweet and polite to women that they consider their equals. At my school, the boys were always respectful and protective of us. They treated public school girls horribly - drunken date rapes.

This is so true. These guys are the same in both the north or the south and it doesn't matter if they are Catholic or Baptist, Southern prep or Northern prep. They are wealthy, entitled, they stick together with their bros, it takes them forever to grow up. They are the guys in college that are there to "work hard, party hard", treat women like crap, and head to Wall Street or wherever. The sad thing is that these alpha males are driving our culture in all of these colleges. Women now behave like them. They binge drink and hookup to consider themselves equal with these stunted men. We have a whole generation of young adults that do not know how to have real relationships. This culture has been expanding for decades.

OP, be careful not to marry one of these DB's! But wait, you work as a lawyer, so that probably wouldn't cut it. They want their women at home.

All mexicans mow lawns.

PP here. I forgot to add that while they tolerated small numbers of Asians and Black people, they absolutely hated Hispanics. There weren't any at my school, and there was always tall about how disgusting Mexicans were.

That made me very uncomfortable, because I knew that 20 years ago they would have said the same thing about me.

DC has been my first exposure to this world as well. I've become friends with a few women who grew up in this culture and are married to these guys (although they're nice guys). It's remarkable to me how uniform their lives/upbringings are and just how small their worlds are. They have family money up the wazoo but they've NEVER LEFT THE US.
Characteristics of this crowd: lots of loafers, jackets at every occasion, Patagonia, hunting, all vacations must be to several US destinations--i.e the Greenbriar or Sea Island. Year after year, those are the only places they go. They have expensive dogs. They all work in finance or commercial real estate or maybe law. They drive Suburbans. The only people they know who aren't white are their nannies or house cleaners.

Based on some wealthy post-college kids in Charleston, SC. My best friend moved to Charleston post-college and these are the type of people I met. Some are very similar to the Richmond crowd I see when I visit my nephews.

I am from a Northeast prep culture which is very different. The clothes may be a bit similar---but the attitudes are opposite. The women are more Jackie Kennedy preppy--not tons of make-up, etc. but maybe same Lily dress.

I LOVE Cameron on SC. She is absolutely adorable. The drinking on this show is SPOT-ON. Southern frat/aristocrat culture. The southern eccentricities fascinate me.

No, they are not post college kids. They are actually quite old.

You are right!!! They are just stunted...some of the guys are as old as me. I think of them as post-college because they behave that way.

Cameran was on The Real World: San Diego in 2004, so I would think she's in her 30s now.
