| Another former Catholic here who hates on the Church. It's not just their handling of the child rape scandal, it's their belief on issues like homosexuality, birth control and especially allowing women to be leaders. I don't understand how anyone who has a daughter can bring her up in a church where the message is that you're not good enough to be a priest. |

I disagree with the "it's the institution, not the people" thing.
I have frustrations with the church, but I find individual Catholics frustrating, too. Most individual Catholics I meet are conservative politically and will go on and on and on about the evils of "big government," and yet they seem completely fine with "big religion" and a huge bureaucracy overseeing their spiritual and personal lives. |
| I don't understand any (Muslim) religion that says it's ok to torture, rape and murder your five year old daughter, as long as you're rich enough to pay your blood money. |
New poster. Why? Because Catholics believe that Jesus was the founder of a Church and he put Peter and others in charge of that Church (Read Acts of the Apostles). It follows that he actually gave authority to those people who were in charge of the Church. They set up rules. Christians who are Catholic have been following those rules since that time. Just a footnote, Jesus was fairly specific in advising his followers that the Holy Spirit (the Advocate) would forever guide the Church and the "Gates of hell would not prevail against it". The Church is clearly imperfect, and has had many imprerfections and imperfect leaders. However, those who are faithful Catholics believe what Jesus said, that the Holy Spirit would guide the Church. As such, we feel an obligation to submit to the Church's teachings on matters of faith and morals. Maybe someday we will have women in the Priesthood. Maybe we will (again) have married preists (Peter was married). If so, faithful Catholics will joyfully accept those changes as they are not dogma, but are merely current practice. I have no idea what answer you gave your daughter, but the true answer about women in the hierarchy of the Church is simple...Because that is what the Church teaches. The critics in this forum will view this as blind obedience to a "corrupt Church". For me, it is easy to be obedient as I believe that is what the scriptures teach us. |
Most individual Catholics span the spectrum from left to right. On most issues pertaining to economics and social justice, Catholics reflecting the social teachings of the Church, tend to vote liberal. Among all religious voters in the 2008 election, more Catholics voted for Obama than Romney. This tendency to vote Democrat holds for the last four elections. The GOP had thought it could align Catholics and Evangelical Protestants together, failing to recognize that outside of issues like abortion, Catholic and Evangelical Protestant voters have very little in common. All this would seem to belie your perception that most Catholics are "conservative." |

You are a perfect example of why I can't tolerate the religion any longer.
Blind faith is bullshit. What if your daughter came home one day wearing a burqa? Don't laugh. It happened to my former student. She had found Islam - and a boyfriend who loved his subservient girlfriend. Is that blind faith? Really, what in the fuck is the difference? Any religion that restricts women is a sick "belief" system that supports a patriarchal society. The church also decided that priests should not to marry so that their land and all of their belongings would stay with the church. And how about those castrati? politics, power, and sick views on sexuality Face it, lady. Your blind faith amounts to nothing - unless, of course, you want to keep women down. straight from your pope's mouth, by the way - “Women are naturally inept to exercise political office..the order of nature and human activity teach us that a man is superior in the realm of politics…”

Sorry you feel this way. I'll pray for you. |

That's the best you can do?
still not impressed by your blind faith
Sorry you feel this way. I'll pray for you. |

I think the better question is, "What is good about being Catholic?"
I can only think of bad. |
Until I read posts by Catholics complaining that people hate on Catholics on this website, I had no idea that Catholics weren't liked. This really is news to me. I have never heard any disparaging remarks about Catholics. I grew up in a Catholic neighborhood and heard plenty of anti-Jewish remarks by Catholics. |
What are you? |
| There is at least one Jew on DCUM who really, really hates Catholics. This may or may not be the "I'm Jewish and I'm glad I don't pray to a dead man" poster from the other thread. |
now that the pope retired the new one will allow birth control and gays and abortion just not women priests but maybe one day |
I'm not the person you reference, but as a former Catholic and now a Prostestant, my eyes have been opened. I have to pray for grace and patience, especially when dealing with my staunch Catholic family. I'm as conservative as they come, but I'm a far better Prostestant than Roman Catholic. |

NP here. I am an atheist and sometimes complain about the church's involvement in political issues, and other things.
It's not Catholic bashing. I am not hating on the religion, but I am openly disagreeing with some of the church's policies. If it was within the church, I wouldn't be complaining. |
