Is the criticism really of Catholics, or is it of the Church and its hierarchy?
What's the difference? The Catholics support the church and its hierarchy. The Catholics ARE the church. signed, former Catholic disgusted by the pedophilia
The Church is not the Pope, the bishops or the priests and I think you would be hard pressed to find a Catholic, myself among them, who supports the criminal cover up of the child abuse scandal. How do I react? By calling fir accountability? By refusing to give money to the Archdiocesan legal defense fund. I do not need to stop going to Mass, nor decamp for for some other church.
So you refuse to give to the legal defense fund. wow . . . That is ONE fantastic way to make a statement! In the meantime, when my daughter was at a Catholic school learning about the church, there was a test question regarding the sacrament of the holy order. When she saw that only men were candidates, she asked why. I didn't give her the answer she wanted. Instead, I told her that when that question came up on the test, she was to add in women who had the desire to become priests. And if the teacher knocked off a few points, so be it. She did and got the answer wrong. To this day, I still have her test. You can call for "accountability" all you want, but until the church opens the vatican up to the poor (Have you been there? I have.) and until the church breaks its ties with the mafia, I will continue to view Catholicism as a dirty business that violates children. Let's hope that in your next life, you return with a brain. huh - funny how no nuns are listed -
New poster. Why? Because Catholics believe that Jesus was the founder of a Church and he put Peter and others in charge of that Church (Read Acts of the Apostles). It follows that he actually gave authority to those people who were in charge of the Church. They set up rules. Christians who are Catholic have been following those rules since that time. Just a footnote, Jesus was fairly specific in advising his followers that the Holy Spirit (the Advocate) would forever guide the Church and the "Gates of hell would not prevail against it". The Church is clearly imperfect, and has had many imprerfections and imperfect leaders. However, those who are faithful Catholics believe what Jesus said, that the Holy Spirit would guide the Church. As such, we feel an obligation to submit to the Church's teachings on matters of faith and morals. Maybe someday we will have women in the Priesthood. Maybe we will (again) have married preists (Peter was married). If so, faithful Catholics will joyfully accept those changes as they are not dogma, but are merely current practice. I have no idea what answer you gave your daughter, but the true answer about women in the hierarchy of the Church is simple...Because that is what the Church teaches. The critics in this forum will view this as blind obedience to a "corrupt Church". For me, it is easy to be obedient as I believe that is what the scriptures teach us.
