good list.
I'd add Penn State (i know i know shit press, etc) is decent as well and has extremely good recruiting for its reputation. Ridiculous amount of PSU grads in the Bos-Wash area in a lot of industries and On-Campus Recruiting is comparable if not better than many on your list.

I wondered what the current crop of kids thought about PSU. I think we'll skip it. There are too many other good choices and I think PSU has a ways to fall before it makes its climb back up the ranks.

I was up at PSU last fall to speak at an alum event, and while there is a general perception problem in terms of public optics, I'm not sure if it has affected large hiring companies.

OCI is still quite strong and tied with J&J, P&G, Big4 accounting, Defense contractor engineering are still quite deep.

I do not think the scandal has affected top students getting offers from companies that come and recruit on campus.

A lot of it has to do with the fact that PSU is the largest public in the mid atlantic/northeast that's rated as highly as it is so your 'middle class' 'upper-middle class' corporate employers from the north east, mid-atlantic, and midwest love going there to recruit.

P.S. Not a shill of the school. I wouldn't go there if i had to do it again, but that's because I would never go to any public college in this country. Public high school is one thing, but public universities i feel are meat markets. I'd take the 6 figure debt and go to carnegie mellon, Hopkins, Georgetown, tufts (I was not ivy caliber, got into schools a tier below but didn't think it was worth the price).

Yeah lets all listen to this guy. He says that UVA and UNC are "meat markets." He's a Penn State graduate so he must be real smart.

DC likely applying to these 3. We are not VA residents so the VA schools are out of state.

DC ruled out UNC and UVM. We ruled out CU-Boulder. [/quote]

kid might love this school but we ruled it out too.

Why rule out Boulder?

uva has 14k undergrads and unc has 18k undergrads.

when i used that term, I meant it as 'large schools/huge student bodies'. My two best friends went to Penn and Cornell and they both would not go back there for undergrad due to UG student body size, and I tend to agree after my experience and discussing it with their (and other experiences).

Perhaps to you that's not large, but i'm just giving my 2 cents of my experience and my friends' experiences at schools with UG bodies in the 5digit range.

My two other siblings went to AWS schools and had a much better UG experience.

UNC and UVA are AMAZING schools but don't tell me that they are not 'large'. Sure they're half the size of PSU, but that's still pretty fucking big.

When I made my comment i forgot about William & Mary. There's a public with a great student body size.

My daughter wanted a public OOS school with diversity, so she applied to:

UNC-Charlotte (Chapel Hill is abysmal in the diversity dept)
Rutgers-News Brunswick
Drexel (not public, but hoping aid makes it a viable option)

UW Madison has a beautiful campus. It is hilly and green and by the lake. It also has an urban area with many restaurants and shops, good arts and music scene, sports, and outdoor activities. There really is something for everyone at UW with great academics, nice students, and large alumni network.

A kid from a Fairfax County high school can get into much better college out of state than JMU. Agree that Pitt is one of those. Penn State too. I'm curious about some of the other good out of state schools.

Too cold.

Similar to Boston. Alabama and Mississippi are warmer if that is your most important factor in choosing a college.

I wouldn't say most important but it seems climate is a very important factor. And it's a teenager's list of criteria. DD also eliminated schools with purple or orange school colors. So, there's that.

For us it is the opposite, we love cold climates. (The best schools tend to be in colder climates too.)

Cuz there's nothing to do but study when it's cold out?

DD is intrigued regarding USC. What can you say about it?

it's in a ghetto. Housing is gonna be an issue.

Yeah, I'm in and out of USC all the time. Why would you want to spend so much money for the University of Spoiled Children? Party school. HOrrible neighborhood. Joke used to be that everyone standing in line to register for classes at USC would compare notes on when they had been rejected by UCLA.

oops. nevermind. when you said USC I assumed you meant Univ. of Southern California.

Butyou are correct. Niece just graduated from there. Horrendous neighborhood. I spent a term teaching there and ran from my car back and forth. No way would I send a Virginian all the way across the country for USC.
