What great out of state public colleges do your kids love?

What are their school colors? Haha. But I don't love schools that are so hard to get to. I've just heard there's no great way to get to Miami except by driving. But I haven't looked into it.

University of Georgia - as of this year, good merit money for OOS kids with good grades and test scores. Good national reputation, great football, amazing college town. The Honors Program at South Carolina is extremely competitive to get into - think along the lines of getting into UVA and UNC as an OOS applicant - but they do, in fact, give great merit money. So does Miami of Ohio, which is accessible from Indianapolis and Dayton airports (but yes, it's kind of in the middle of nowhere), has good sports and academics and one of the prettiest campuses in America. We know lots of kids going to Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee - good quality of life, good state school education, great money for OOS students from around here. Our kids look like rock stars compared to many of their in-state applicants.

Too cold.

Similar to Boston. Alabama and Mississippi are warmer if that is your most important factor in choosing a college.

I wouldn't say most important but it seems climate is a very important factor. And it's a teenager's list of criteria. DD also eliminated schools with purple or orange school colors. So, there's that.

For us it is the opposite, we love cold climates. (The best schools tend to be in colder climates too.)

It is very cold up there, but you get used to it. You buy serious coats and long underwear and go on your merry way. Just don't have her live in Towers or Statesider!

DD is intrigued regarding USC. What can you say about it?

it's in a ghetto. Housing is gonna be an issue.

Oh no. I haven't heard anything negative about its location (well, anything really).
Regarding the UMichigan and UT Austin recs, I think these are way too competitive to get into.
Regarding, JMU, my kids have said "no thank you" and that's fine with us because we think the kids can be accepted to better out of state schools.

Suits the rest of us just fine. But one must wonder if this is more anti JMU flame bait because if UT is too competitive, your kids would likely be rejected by JMU as well no offense.

Maybe I read the chart upside down. But from what I read, my kids would definitely be accepted to JMU if we didn't have the zip code we do (and they'd have a decent shot at any rate) and UT Austin looked very competitive. But I'll look at UT again. I hope I'm wrong. Thanks.

SC Gamecocks are supposed to have that great Honors College as PP mentioned, yes. I'll throw in Illinois for Engineering and a few LAS majors, EALC is still good. Indiana for Linguistics or Music plus nice campus with lots of hills. Gotta have kids ok with harsh icy winters tho

I hope my kids can go somewhere warm

New Poster here. We visited U of SC and although the school seemed nice, our DC didn't want to apply because the school is located right in the city.

Does it have a campus feel at all or is the campus dispersed among city buildings?

And thank you for leaving one more spot for a child in Va to go to a great school like JMU at one fourth the cost of UT out of state....with arguably the same outcomes if not better...

True. It's in the inner city.

Clemson has a beautiful campus, a great football team that makes the town the largest city in SC on game day, and a Greek system that isn't the entire social structure.

Anonymous wrote:James Madison!! Awesome school.

How is it that every college thread brings out the JMU cheerleader? Even when the thread relates to colleges out of the state of Virginia? It seems the JMU booster feels she has something to prove or excuse.

How do kids/parents usually travel from DC to Clemson?

True. It's in the inner city.

The "ghetto" poster was referring to University of Southern California. The rest were discussing South Carolina.
