| I rode the metro bus every day of high school until I could drive. |
| Of course. But I wouldn't just throw her in the deep end cold, she will have ridden it with me beforehand and we will show her how to plan her route and talk through possible contingencies. |
What a sad attitude. I'm female, and I do not let perverts and creeps run my life. I will not be teaching my daughters to live their lives in fear of them either. Girls are more than just "targets". I will not let my girls grow up seeing themselves this way. We will learn and utilize reasonable safety measures and then we will go about our lives. |
| I would do it. But it depends on her attitude. If you coach her about harassment and are confident that she can yell "GET AWAY FROM ME" without a moment's hesitation, then you are good. If not, you need to work with her more. This is a skill that all young woman need. |
| Of course I would. Kids over grade 3 can ride the NY subway alone. Why couldn't a 14yr old. How coddling do you have to be? |
| This is an old thread, not sure why it was dug up. But I do have to comment that I'm shocked someone is questioning if a 14 year old can ride Metro alone. Of course they can, many kids do it much younger. |
+1 What better way to learn how to handle creeps than on a bus filled with commuters, in a safe part of town. Or would you rather her first introduction to harassment happen when she is walking alone through a sketchy area at 3 am, or riding a bus in a foreign country, 22 years old and completely unprepared for the world? |
