I'm impressed by 6-figure gains in under a decade. But whatever.

Some of the price increases on here do not sound sustainable... if you bought a house last year and it's already worth 100k more, how much longer is that supposed to go on? Is the house supposed to gain a million in value in 10 years? How are people just starting out going to be able to afford homes? I dunno, it just doesn't seem right to me.

Yes, its not that simple because it depends on location . some places are experiencing rapid increases due to gentrification or things like the silver line. Eventually the prices will equalize to neighboring high prices neighborhoods.

This is OP. In my case the house was already worth 100K more when I purchased it. It was a foreclosure that needed lots of cosmetic work which apparently turned off lots of buyers so the house sat and sat and the bank kept slashing the price. It was the dead of winter and we got lucky. I don't expect the value to go up much higher than the current appraisal.

About $650k in 2003. About $1.1 million now, acc'd to real estate agent who came by about a month ago.

But we had to put about $75k worth of work into it.

Paid $850k in 2007. Have put it about $100k of work (hardwood floors in a few rooms, painting, new carpet, finish basement). Worth $630k. Heartbreaking. In outer silver spring(20905).

Bought in sketchy but gentrifying neighborhood in '99 for 150k. Sold for 590k in '04. Bought 2nd house in same neighborhood for 630k that needed some love. Put 50k in repairs and upgrades (nothing radical though). I believe, before the b
