TC Williams High School - shocked

It's a health clinic and yes, I have checked it out. It's great!

One of the things they are able to do is perform the physical exam needed for participating in sports. Many students would not be able to play if this service were not available.

I see people complaining about the Clinic and it makes me wonder if they think kids at schools in Fairfax County or Arlington don't have sex or something? I'd rather young girls have access to birth control than that they didn't. In my mind, this is a positive thing.

Agreed. It is NOT that kids in other districts are having less sex. It's that they have more access to health care and birth control. All this does is level the playing field. I'm too lazy to look it up right now, but the teen pregnancy rate dropped the year after they moved this health clinic into the school (it has existed, but offsite previously).

Obviously, I'm not a fan of high school students having sex, but this is obviously doing good. PP also made an excellent point about the sports physicals, too. I just don't see how this isn't win-win. I suspect the people that object to the health clinic are the same ones that demand that their child be excused from the health classes that mention birth control.

No, it's not appropriate in the schools.

And, it's also inappropriate to provide daycare for teen mothers. Teen mothers should be encouraged to continue their education, but they should be sequestered somewhere else away from the general population, because otherwise that signals a tacit approval. Being a teen mother is a shameful thing, and we shouldn't pretend otherwise. Not all choices are valid.

Unless, it's your kid, of course. Then it's just "a good kid that made one mistake."

As for having it in the school, kids don't always make connections between actions and long term consequences. I can think of no better reality check to make a kid pause before having sex than seeing a girl in the hallway who is pregnant. Or seeing how that kid's life is totally turned upside down by having the kid (it's not like having daycare means the teen mom gets to party). Kids see it right in front of them and understand the very real consequences of their actions.

Finally, to repeat what has been said before. If you think kids in Fairfax County, or any of the private schools in Alexandria, are having any less sex than the kids at TC, you are delusional. They are having sex. They are using birth control (many girls get prescriptions for the Pill from pediatricians, often to alleviate menstrual pain). Alternatively, Mommy and Daddy are quieting making arrangements for an abortion. Teen sex happens.

Two words. Bristol. Palin.

No. Yuck is teenager mothers. They don't get to parade their mistakes in front of other kids. Give them the education they need to provide for their children, but not in the mainstream.

Yes, this happens in Arlington and Fairfax, but the mothers are sequestered in other buildings and alternative schools, which Alexandria doesn't have facilities to do.

But they shouldn't carry on in school as if there are no consequences. The message sent to other kids is "we allow this" or "this is OK." And it's not.

Hon, why don't you go pray on it. And then send your kids to private school. You don't get to make these decisions for everyone, unless you buy an island and start the schools yourself.

Yes, the policy of hiding away problems has proven so successful over the years.

Actually, prosperous white suburban children whose parents are college grads do not have sex or use drugs, ever. They engage in "age-appropriate social experimentaion." What the PP probably meant is that mixed-race environments like TC are bad. Isn't that it?

Sorry, but your attitude sounds like a recipe for trouble. Let your children find their own way. Don't project your own likes and dislikes onto them. --- teacher

+1. Seriously.

I went to TC a while back (am a mom with an MBA- gives you an idea of age), there were major groups- I was in a mix since apparently I missed middle school in Alexandria - so welcomed a bit - took many AP courses and treated as a newcomer. Anyway, by senior year, it was apparent who was doing well academically (including me) and I had a lot of criticism from the women who were threatened by guys liking others outside of their ES school. I can only say it was weird. Live in the area and frankly after having police come for dances due to knife attacks, etc.= no way would I *with options* submit my kid to TC- I don't care how much they spent on x- it's a volatile school that I did fine somehow- my siblings- mixed reaction. But would not send my kids there period. Don't care if you agree or not.
