| DH and I were considering moving to Alexandria, but then we saw the TC Williams High School SOL scores and we are a bit shocked - some article even said it's the lowest performing H.S. in the state? Is this so? Any thoughts? |
| Anybody? |
| Read through the many posts about TC on this website. Be forewarned, however, that there is a former ACPS parent who currently lives in Arlington who takes any opportunity to bash ACPS. TC has amazing opportunities for motivated, self-confident kids. As the only high school in Alexandria, TC has kids from all socio-economic levels, students from over 80 countries, and with all sorts of disparate ability levels. Special Ed students are at TC along with all the other kids. |
| Thanks PP! |
| We just bought a house in the Fairfax side of Alexandria. There are several great elementary schools and your kids can test in TJ for high school. |
| yes either private school or avoid it like AIDS |
|
Testing for TJ is a huge gamble. I wouldn't buy a house betting on the chance that DS or DD will get in to TJ and you can avoid going to TC.
Read the rankings and reports of TC and make your own choice. Take responses here with a grain of salt, everyone is biased one way or another. Personally, you couldn't pay me to send a DS or DD to TC. |

First, because a lot of people moving into the area don't know this, are you moving to the City of Alexandria (high school is TC Williams) or the Fairfax Co. part of Alexandria (high schools are West Potomac, Mt. Vernon, Hayfield, Edison).
Second, if you are moving into the City of Alex., I urge you to go to the local Oldtownmoms yahoo group and ask the question there. You will hear from people who actually have children at TC Williams and not some anonymous people who have an ax to grind... |
I bet there's a better chance at tc's test scores improving over the next few years than any kid's chance of getting into tj. |
+1 The information on oldtownmoms yahoo group is much more accurate than the anonymous posts you'll find here. Ask TC parents to email you offline as well. |
DH and I both scored 800 on our math SATs. I'm not concerned that our kids will get into TJ. |
| What if your kids aren't math/science types? |
+1 Hysterical! |
| The City of Alexandria (for which TC Williams is the local HS) doesn't let its kids attend TJ. You have to live in another jurisdiction if you're interested in TJ. |
They should be since DH majored in science and I majored in math. |
