I see people complaining about the Clinic and it makes me wonder if they think kids at schools in Fairfax County or Arlington don't have sex or something? I'd rather young girls have access to birth control than that they didn't. In my mind, this is a positive thing.
No, it's not appropriate in the schools. And, it's also inappropriate to provide daycare for teen mothers. Teen mothers should be encouraged to continue their education, but they should be sequestered somewhere else away from the general population, because otherwise that signals a tacit approval. Being a teen mother is a shameful thing, and we shouldn't pretend otherwise. Not all choices are valid.
Unless, it's your kid, of course. Then it's just "a good kid that made one mistake." As for having it in the school, kids don't always make connections between actions and long term consequences. I can think of no better reality check to make a kid pause before having sex than seeing a girl in the hallway who is pregnant. Or seeing how that kid's life is totally turned upside down by having the kid (it's not like having daycare means the teen mom gets to party). Kids see it right in front of them and understand the very real consequences of their actions. Finally, to repeat what has been said before. If you think kids in Fairfax County, or any of the private schools in Alexandria, are having any less sex than the kids at TC, you are delusional. They are having sex. They are using birth control (many girls get prescriptions for the Pill from pediatricians, often to alleviate menstrual pain). Alternatively, Mommy and Daddy are quieting making arrangements for an abortion. Teen sex happens. Two words. Bristol. Palin.
