How exactly is a mayor going to improve this? Be realistic

Is this a real question? How about by not being incredibly hostile to businesses? That would be a good place to start.

Mayors have such limited ability to deal with the macro issues that are impacting jobs. Being "less hostile" to business is going to have negligible impacts, if any.

Are you dumb or just insane?

Really don't think you know who the world works.

DC leads the country in job losses. If this was happening in any other city, it would be a five alarm fire.

It is a five alarm fire. But we have no control whatsoever (less than any state) over the politicians continually setting that fire.

Do politicians create jobs?

Not in DC! Here we make it incredibly difficult for businesses to decide to set up shop here. Because, I guess, that's sticking it to the man?

Anthony Williams' signature issue was economic development, and he did more than anyone else in DC history to transform the city from a blighted, depressing place that people were afraid to visit to the DC we have come to know today. So, yes, politicians can make a massive, massive difference with the incentives they create -- if they actually try. Janeese Lewis George would rather do nothing and blame Trump for everything.

DOGE killed thousands of jobs. Keep up.

So, that's the only way to create jobs? We need the government to create an agency to employ people?'

When psychopaths come in and cancel needed jobs and those people leave the DMV and move to Europe to continue amazing research in curing diseases… yes we need NIH, to create jobs. We need grants. We needs federal funds. To cure diseases. Yes.

Also many DOGE’d people are doing their exact job as a contractor but not living in the DMV anymore doing it remotely.

Do politicians create ICE jobs?
Do politicians create fake wars and create jobs in defense?

Apparently do.

Other cities aren't beholden to the whims of the federal executive branch.

Other cities have politicians who actually try to make their economies better.

Please explain in detail how one would do that in DC? And if your answer is "be less hostile to business" then you're not being serious at all.

AI has some specific suggestions:

Market-Oriented Reforms

Reduce Reliance on Federal Government: D.C. should aim to diversify its economy by decreasing dependence on federal contracts and jobs. This can help stabilize the local economy against federal budget fluctuations.

Lower Costs: Implementing policies that reduce operational costs for businesses, such as tax incentives or streamlined regulations, can make D.C. a more attractive place for companies to set up and grow.

Support for Small Businesses

Enhance Resources: Providing better access to funding, mentorship, and training programs for small businesses can foster a more vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Simplify Regulations: Reviewing and refining business regulations to ensure they are not overly burdensome can help small businesses thrive.

Foster Innovation-Driven Growth

Encourage Startups: Creating incubators and accelerators can support new business ventures, particularly in technology and innovation sectors.

Invest in Infrastructure: Improving transportation and digital infrastructure can enhance business operations and attract new companies to the area.

Lol. Business in America is a zero sum game. Where are we going to poach these other industries from, exactly?

A zero sum game? WTF? You think jobs are like friggin bitcoin and there's only so many that can be made?

DP. It’s both and DC is failing at both. California is making an unforced error with a wealth tax and instead of offering a safe haven, our council just says “hold my beer” while we drive our own businesses out. We have a highly trained workforce that should be attractive to companies fleeing elsewhere. But, yeah, DC policies fail as an incubator for new businesses also.

There are other ways to create jobs that don't rely on government to create those jobs. Government jobs don't grow your economy because those workers are paid with the salaries of private workers. Grants and funds are not bottomless pits of money without consequences.

DC has the highest unemployment rate in the country (6.5 percent)

The New York Times:

"She was fired by email while on maternity leave, given 24 hours to clear out her desk and left with three days of health insurance and no severance pay. She had worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development or related groups for more than two decades. She made $175,000 a year.

That was Jan. 28, 2025. Today Amy Uccello and her husband, who also lost his job when U.S.A.I.D. funding for his nonprofit dried up, rely on food stamps, Medicaid and a supplemental nutrition program for women and children that helps with their now 19-month-old daughter.

The mortgage on their home in Washington was until recently in forbearance, meaning they negotiated to pay less than they owed each month. But the bank has now cut them off and suggested they apply for a low-income mortgage program. “We don’t know if we’ll qualify,” Ms. Uccello said. She and her husband have applied for more than 100 jobs with no luck. Most of their friends don’t have jobs either....

When the Trump administration dismantled the sprawling global aid agency last year, it wiped out virtually an entire industry — international development — that had been based in Washington since U.S.A.I.D.’s creation in 1961 under President John F. Kennedy. Nearly all of the agency’s 16,000 employees were laid off. An estimated 280,000 contractors, partners and local hires worldwide lost their jobs as well.

A year later, people have plowed through savings, cashed out retirement funds and moved in with friends and relatives. Former U.S.A.I.D. workers who have done informal surveys estimate that less than half have found full-time work, with many making less than before. An estimated third are unemployed. Others are in part-time work. The District of Columbia currently has the highest unemployment rate in the nation, at 6.7 percent, in large part because of major reductions in the federal work force, including U.S.A.I.D., and cuts to government grants and contracts."
