| Well it looks like my reasonable question was removed so trying again. I have a rising 4th grader and am getting worried because I keep hearing nothing but complaints about one of the teachers in that grade. Apparently a majority of the kids this year have been getting outside tutoring for that class all year - from different Navy teachers to boot. I'm really worried now because this is not something I can easily do. Is it really as bad as parents are saying? |
Maybe stop maligning teachers by name and your posts won’t get taken down. If you’re this worried, put your kid in private. Otherwise, you get what you get. This is public school. |
It was removed because you were ridiculously inappropriate by posting a teacher’s name. What is wrong with you? You think teachers go into this job to be trashed and gossiped about in an anonymous forum? I’m embarrassed for you. |
| I would do anything in my power to avoid that 4th grade teacher. |
I have heard about this teacher but ranting on here will not help. Email the principal and request a meeting. Any teacher (usually) is better than having a long term sub. My kids have had long term subs many times throughout their time in elementary and it really sucked. The worst thing is getting your class assignment the week before school starts and the teachers name says "VACANT". It can always be worse. |
| My son is in 4th grade NAVY, and I have no idea which teacher you guys are talking about. |
| Navy Parents really need their own facebook page to air their grievances in. |
| My honest advice is to deal with the teacher you get. The grades don’t matter at this age and teaching your child to navigate difficult teachers is a good skill to learn for high school. As for the academic part of it, I think language arts at Navy is really bad whether you get an AAP teacher or PBL one. The entire rollout of benchmark by FCPS has left a lot to be desired and I don’t think many teachers are able to make the work interesting. |
Absolutely not. That is one thing I wish I would have done differently. I wish I had made noise about all the teachers we had heard negative things about to ensure my child didn’t have them. Every single fear that I had heard about came true. Some of the teachers we had were horrific and made the year awful. I noticed the PTA moms got the best teachers, or the moms who made a stink. Thankfully, a lot of the teachers have moved on but a few bad eggs are left. God the stories I could tell! |
You can’t bulldoze through life for your kid forever. When you kid doesn’t like their teacher for Spanish or French in high school, you will not be able to get out of it. |
This is only for elementary school my dear. Parents really need to advocate for their kids at this level. You do not want to be stuck with a bad teacher all year in elementary. Go with your gut. If you are hearing bad things, advocate so your child isn’t stuck in that class. |
You’re missing the point honey. |
No you are. Advocating at the elementary level is completely different than middle or high school. At those levels, your child is only stuck with a bad teacher for one period. In elementary, it’s for all subjects. I think it’s way more important to make sure you don’t have a bad teacher for elementary school. Also, overall, middle and high school teachers are stronger than elementary school teachers. Study guides are provided and they follow a syllabus pretty well. So back to my point - at the elementary school level, you can basically bulldoze your way. Meet with the principal, share your concerns. They don’t want to waste time with an upset parent so they generally cave. But do it before your kid is assigned the teacher. One year, the son of the PTA President was placed in a bad teacher’s class for open house. The very next day the kid was suddenly moved to a different teacher’s class. It happens more often than you think. One thing to notice - look at where teacher’s own kids are placed. Teachers who work at the school generally hand pick their kids’ teachers - and it’s very telling which class they do not put their own child in. |
This isn’t a case of your kid jut doesn’t like a teacher. This is a case of the teacher is incompetent and your child is actually harmed by being in that class. The anxiety and mental stress is real. |
