Absolutely not. That is one thing I wish I would have done differently. I wish I had made noise about all the teachers we had heard negative things about to ensure my child didn’t have them. Every single fear that I had heard about came true. Some of the teachers we had were horrific and made the year awful. I noticed the PTA moms got the best teachers, or the moms who made a stink. Thankfully, a lot of the teachers have moved on but a few bad eggs are left. God the stories I could tell![/quote]

This is only for elementary school my dear. Parents really need to advocate for their kids at this level. You do not want to be stuck with a bad teacher all year in elementary. Go with your gut. If you are hearing bad things, advocate so your child isn’t stuck in that class.[/quote]

No you are. Advocating at the elementary level is completely different than middle or high school. At those levels, your child is only stuck with a bad teacher for one period. In elementary, it’s for all subjects. I think it’s way more important to make sure you don’t have a bad teacher for elementary school. Also, overall, middle and high school teachers are stronger than elementary school teachers. Study guides are provided and they follow a syllabus pretty well.

So back to my point - at the elementary school level, you can basically bulldoze your way. Meet with the principal, share your concerns. They don’t want to waste time with an upset parent so they generally cave. But do it before your kid is assigned the teacher.

One year, the son of the PTA President was placed in a bad teacher’s class for open house. The very next day the kid was suddenly moved to a different teacher’s class. It happens more often than you think.

One thing to notice - look at where teacher’s own kids are placed. Teachers who work at the school generally hand pick their kids’ teachers - and it’s very telling which class they do not put their own child in.
