Number of colleges applied to & # accepted to?

Also have sophomore DD who would love to attend any of these state schools, especially UT Austin. This all seems so daunting at this stage with the OOS acceptance rate in single digits.

Very, very high test scores. Check all the other boxes (grades, leadership, etc.). And don’t apply to the most competitive programs.

I feel like DS a great list.

Attending University of Florida with merit and as part of the honors program.

Congrats! What are your son’s second best options? Is the merit from UF bigger? Thanks.

It's going to depend on the major, and what school they are at.

Male CS major with super high stats from a high performing school is basically a lottery for T10.

English major especially male from a lower performing school will get you into T5 with lower stats compared to the CS major with super high stats.

That sounds high.

Applied to 11, no Ivies, rejected from MIT and Johns Hopkins, waitlisted as CMU, deferred at Georgia Tech, accepted to UVA, Virginia Tech UMD and all the other local ones

This isn't helpful unless you categorize it under safety, target, reach.

My senior applied to 15 I believe. The number was higher than it would have been if he hadn’t been hoping to continue playing his sport. He was accepted everywhere he applied but he also only applied to schools with 50% higher acceptance rates so they were all academic safeties with his stats. The big reason for that was the need for merit aid. In the end he found a school that allows him to play his sport and was a good deal financially.

My oldest applied to I believe 9 schools in 2020 and got into all of them. The schools were mostly more selective than my senior’s list. They have similar stats but it’s much harder now. My middle kid applied in 2022 and had stronger stats than the others. I think he applied to 8 or maybe 9. He was WL from 2 we were confident were targets and rejected from UVA which we knew was a reach. He was accepted into the remainder.

Safeties: into 2/2
Targets: into 3/3 (surprised by merit from 2)
Reaches: 2/5 (T20-30-ish)

Kid from no-name public, 11APs w/5s on all taken, top 10% of class. 1400s SAT, sports captain, job, no crazy ECs. STEM, non Eng

Actually choosing between 2 of the targets after more discovery on their major and the specific programs offered.

In Hindsight I do think we put together a good list. Two things I learned - folks apply to way too many safeties. Unless you are doing some hard merit shopping, Pick 1-2 that youve actually visited, know you like and know you can afford. Also interests change between when your kid is picking the list in summer and when they are actually choosing. Glad we had some diversity (region, size etc) when making final selection.
