UVA is similar. Some of my kid’s friends with same gpa/scores and ec type were rejected while my kid was accepted. It’s unpredictable.

But it’s likely because your class rank/GPA/SAT fall in the borderline zone. I’m sure there’re students in their school who can view UVA as a safety.

Both my kids applied ED and got into their first choice schools. So one and done for both. A very stress free senior year all things considered.

There is plenty of data available, both generally and for your school’s admissions outcomes, that can inform your student’s chances and whether a particular school is a target or reach. Do your research and don’t just assume anything!

Data does exist. Yet it is still unpredictable from MCPS MD

Applied to 14
Rejected 3 (1 target, 2 reaches)
Waitlisted 4 (1 target, 4 reaches)
Accepted 7 (4 safeties, 1 target, 2 reaches)

This looks reach heavy, but some schools were lower reaches than others so we felt comfortable with the spread.

Applied to: 15 (more than we expected to but our school-based counselor encouraged DC to add 2 more safeties during the Fall to our list. In hindsight, this was unnecessary.)
Accepted to: 11
