Private & Independent Schools
Actually, Hardy and the Rec Center could share just fine. Neither needs it all of the field nor every day. Either way, DCPS and DPR should be solving the problem for both Hardy and the Rec Center, not just hand the public resource to a single, small private school who now has their own fields. |
Maret has not permitted for the field at all this spring. It’s a DPR issue. Maret has their new fields that they are using. |
| Do you know how contracts work? DPR signed a bad deal with Maret that gave them an option to renew over 20 years ago. Sounds like you think it is Hardy’s field. It is the field for Jelleff. Jelleff wasn’t even dc government property until right before this deal. The equitable solution is for the field to be available for the kids at Jelleff everyday after school. Hardy shouldn’t be able to annex the field. At least Maret contracted for it. |
Why doesn’t Jelleff need it everyday? The kids need to go out and play everyday. |
They may want to use outside space everyday, but it's a big field and the rec program is not sports the whole time. Why wouldn't they be able to share it? |
“And in October, the field-fight saga culminated in a packed-to-the-gills D.C. Council hearing where residents of some of the most affluent neighborhoods in the nation’s capital held a kind of woke-off of the well-off, with both sides vying for the righteous mantle of social justice in their ongoing turf war.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/how-a-fight-over-a-city-athletic-field-turned-into-a-woke-off-of-washingtons-well-off/2019/12/06/fc2d14dc-07c9-11ea-818c-fcc65139e8c2_story.html |
| Maret has its own field near St. John’s. My son played them in baseball at it today. |
Yeah, the agreement that allows Maret to hoard the field. Because there is an agreement with the city doesn’t mean it’s just. |
+1 It was a widely criticized no-bid, no review deal for a decade, and then Maret exercised its right to renew for another decade despite major community mobilization against it. I can't wait for the day that Maret gets its greedy paws off of the Jelleff field, which DPR is paying $28 million to renovate. |
| I thought no one was using Jelleff right now because of renovations. Our soccer club used to practice there at night but was told they can't starting this spring because of renos. |
Yeah, but obviously Maret used its psychic insider powers to make those renovations happen just so a kid from Hardy would have to ride a bus. Anytime a child in NWDC is inconvenienced, it is Maret's fault. What's the phrase here? Oh right: try to keep up! |
|
Being mad at Maret for this is the equivalence of me being pissed that my neighbors with the baller pool swim whenever I want and I have to go to the neighborhood pool instead.
Maret’s land is private property and they can use it however they want. |
It's public land |
| Maret is all about the community, but not really about the community outside school. Such a private school behavior. |
Longtime local journalist who also happened to be a Hardy parent. Not just some rando with a blog. |
