Is TCU considered elite?

Anonymous
Agree with the PP who said Rice is the only elite private school in Texas.

Some of the programs at UT-Austin are elite, i.e., computer science, biochemical engineering, Plan II, Business Honors (and to a lesser extent, Business in general).

I'm not sure any of the programs at Texas A&M make it elite, though it a solid great school.

Didn’t read any comments, but the answer is no.

You should check before posting. Baylor and SMU both outrank TCU as they are tied for 88. TCU is 97.

And try not to call schools “joke schools” - not everyone can get to go to a T20. Be more charitable.

PP here. Yes I know. This is how I know rankings are BS.

From a person who grew up in/went to college in/lives in Texas

Rice
UT
AM
SMU
TCU (sorry don’t care if US News doesn’t agree)

But the schools have vastly different vibes—so it’s not just “pick the best.”

Thank you. Have a daughter thinking of AM. She’s interested in business, studious but also wants social/football and campus comaraderie, a good kid, independent politically. I get the impression that AM provides good educational + career prep/opportunities for those who seek it - are our impressions correct? Not sure where she wants to live after college.

I do not get the appeal of this school at all outside of Texas. It is a cult. And weird.

The real question is, why did you post this? You don’t just suspect that’s she’s overstating, you know she is. Maybe you’re as insecure as she is. Food for thought.

It is not elite.

It is getting harder to get into than it used to be.

It is elite in the sense that there are a lot of wealthy kids there and the Greek life is all that. Some might say it is like SMU.

SMU hates to be compared to TCU.

How is it getting much harder to get into? Applications this year aren’t much higher than they were in 2016 (25,000 vs 20,000).

Most other schools including Ivy schools, top flagships..even schools like UConn..have seen nearly 200% increases in applications over the last 10 years.

I would say only Turing, ECB, an Forty Acres are elite at UT.

E2EnMed at TAMU is elite.

Everything is bigger and better in Texas. Even the frogs have horns there as well.

I am from Dallas’s area. TCU is like the next step for private school kids. Girls go to find husbands who will be set financially. SMU is for the elite private school kids from N. Dallas are or Colleyville/Southlake. Certain kids go there to join sorors and get seen to win the lottery on a life of ease. It generally does not attract people outside the area of Oklahoma and Louisiana.

Sadly those frogs or Horned Toads are gone. I remember when they were everywhere when I grew up in DeSoto, TX

This^. In Texas Rice is the only elite private school. Second tier is Baylor, SMU, Trinity and TCU. Some good students go to these schools for merit scholarships and others for proximity. However, majority goes because either they can't get into Rice and UT, not allowed to go out of state, don't want to attend UNT, UTD, UH and other random state schools etc so parents make a deal to pay for private school to keep them at a driving distance.

Ahem. Aggie here….

I know! She’s proud of her daughter. Her daughter might have had some difficulties over the years and this is really great news. Don’t judge.

Even the daughter hasn’t had difficulties, OP’s attitude is still rude. Just say: “Wonderful that you are so excited about where your daughter is going to school!”

I just had to laugh.

I mean, I'm sure it's a perfectly good school but let's not pretend it's something it is clearly not.

LSU is prestigious as far as athletic programs, but that's about all. LOL

I'd never heard of TCU until Hailey Van Lith and Olivia Miles transferred there.
