Is TCU considered elite?

Anonymous
An acquaintance from the neighborhood has been really bragging about her kid getting in there. Unlike many people in this area, I don't keep up with college rankings, acceptance rates, prestige tiers and the like, but I've only really heard of TCU because of football and certainly never heard anyone else imply it's an elite school. This woman has always been a bit of a BSer when it comes to the accomplishments of her kid, who is truthfully kind of average in every way. I assume this situation is no different and just wanted to be sure.

Um, no. Like SMU, it’s a school for wealthy full pay kids across the academic spectrum. The only thing that has changed recently is the regional appeal of schools in the South (including Texas) to kids from the northeast and mid-Atlantic.

It’s not elite academically on the level of CalTech but it’s an acceptable strong college amongst UMC/rich known for “nice” (meaning good citizens, generally polite, leadership volunteering etc) mostly Christian, families. The John Hamm rich investor in Landman sent his kids there - no surprise.

TCU has no minimum requirement for GPA or test score to be considered for admission. TCU is test-optional for applicants through 2026. For the class that entered TCU in fall 2025, the mid-50% GPA was 3.65-3.95 and the middle 50 percent scored between 1200 and 1400 on the SAT, or between 28 and 33 on the ACT.

So, congrats to the neighbor's child!

1242 Average SAT. But Test Optional Now. That's all you need to know. Easier to find than DCUM site.

No but the type of people who send their kids there really don’t look at rankings.

OP, could you possibly be more catty?

People are allowed to be proud of their kids who don’t attend an “elite” school.

Obviously you find this person annoying and are looking for a gotcha, and maybe she is annoying. You, coming here to find out from other people if your snotty attitude about a perfectly fine school is shared, 100% come off as a jerk.

LSU sends out ads claiming it is one of the "oldest and most prestigious universities" in the country.

I just had to laugh.

I mean, I'm sure it's a perfectly good school but let's not pretend it's something it is clearly not.

OP is part of the problem.

People can be proud of whatever school they want.
