Yeah, like they really lose so much education from not sitting in school an extra 2 hours. High school students would just miss advisory tomorrow, which is a complete waste of time.
Longfellow kept requiring 1.5 hours on Lexia twice last week! Using EdTech after, days off—great teaching!

What is your childcare plan and why isn’t it in place? Oh I see. FCPS is your childcare.

i don’t have a childcare plan for 2 weeks. i have no family close by. my husband leaves extremely early for work. we aren’t part of SACC. what do you expect me to do? i work part time. from 9:30-3:30 while my kids are in school. on days where they are scheduled off i take off. but days where they don’t go in until 11:20 i can’t show up at work at 12. it doesn’t work. and fcps wasn’t even telling families until 4pm daily earlier in the week. i am sure a lot of families are struggling with the late starts. maybe not middle school who goes early or high school who can get themselves to school. but for elementary it’s hard. not to mention kids are behind in learning, teachers say there isn’t time to get it all done, kids are missing weeks of specials. it’s winter. we live in an area where we get snow. it’s been 2 weeks since we had snow. it’s time to go back to a normal schedule

You either have to take off work or maybe give up the part time job then. FCPS cannot make choices based on your odd work schedule, sorry.

2 things can be true:

Delayed start because of cold.
Tough for working parents.

No need for the nasty snark. I have a husband who had to be at work for years very early. Fortunately, our financial circumstances allowed me to stay home during that period of our life. Not everyone has that option. And, child care in these circumstances is quite different from the normal.

While I understand the frustration, I think casting aspersions at people is unnecessary and says a lot more about the attacker than the attacked.

There was no nasty snark in my post at all. The choice is either continue to take off work or give up the part time job. FCPS is not going to trump your job over safety, sorry.

This is late-stage capitalism, people. You don't want school to be childcare but the reality is that it is childcare for a lot of students,(among MANY other things). Blame society, this is simply where we're at.

The Russian bots have arrived. Not a capitalism issue. The nanny can adjust their schedule accordingly.

Might as well homeschool, right?

Why even bother sending the kids to school if missing it doesn't matter...

Missing 2 hours for one day… really not a big deal. Plus, we have snow hours built into the schedule for a reason.

Except it would be the 5th day of 2 hr delays and it won’t warm until Wed. So 7 days of 2 hr delays?

I hear Lexia is pretty good at teaching/ reviewing grammar, but 1.5 hours using it is excessive. Also, I don’t know what EdTech is but I assume it’s computer based, so adding that to Lexia is way too much time on a screen.

I think we’ve used maybe half of our snow days? Two hour delays are much better than closing.
I get that it’s hard for the ES parents, though.

I think she’s saying, unlike 40 years ago, it’s much harder for families to get by on a one parent salary, and a lot of folks can’t afford regular childcare, so they are forced to use school as both educators/ babysitters. Children are becoming unaffordable for a lot of young adults.

They show up to class and spend hours looking at their computer screen - this is the result of tech companies “sleezing” into education to gain profits. And FCPS just buys it up, buys into it, and then forces it on teachers.

get your husband's mistress to take them. he probably leaves early every day to go see her; or maybe, him?

There are really two meanings of “using the schools as your childcare.” The first is when someone has no involvement in their kids’ education, doesn’t enforce homework, doesn’t read to their kids, and sends their kids exclusively to get them out of the house. I agree that this version of using the schools as childcare is bad. The second version is to shame two-career families that are invested in their kids’ education, but need the money or want the professional opportunities and plan their work around a reliable school schedule. It’s very hard to keep a babysitter on retainer for winter weather events, and there’s no way there are enough babysitters in the city to watch all of the kids whose parents need to go to work on snow days. There’s a strong undertone of “women shouldn’t work outside the home” to the second version…

What an odd take. Your first meaning basically shames a single income parent for expecting schools to educate them. Maybe they don’t have the money to pay for endless enriching extracurriculars and
Tutors.

I’m, I don’t really understand your response… how does being involved in your kids’ education require expensive extracurricular activities? I wrote that an uninvolved parent is someone who doesn’t enforce homework and isn’t at all invested in what the schools are trying to do… there are plenty of those, who simply don’t care whether their children make an effort. That’s what I see as using the schools as daycare. Not a single mom who doesn’t have a ton of resources but expects her kids to be engaged and try at school, and monitors their homework to at least some degree.

I posted about the "nasty snark." It was aimed at the PP who accused the working mom's husband of having an affair since he left so early for work and couldn't watch the kids.

As for the weather, I’ve been up and out for work by 8 for over a week and don’t care either way about that. My HS kids love the late starts and it’s made the house so much more pleasant.

They really should have just delayed. Oh well.
