What about Monday?

No it should be a full closure.

And the county seriously has to talk to the schools. I walked by the MS near me. The long stretch of sidewalk in front of it is clean but you can’t access the sidewalk due to the huge piles of snow blocking the entry points.
And since I am out walking a lot, I can see how those that put some extra effort in on Sunday aren’t dealing with an ice block mess this week. This storm wasn’t a surprise.

Sigh. No. We don't have the resources, and if we allocate more resources to snow removal for major storms that come every 10 or 20 years, it takes money away from something else.

Like what? Taylor’s expense account?

No. Bus tracking app. Payouts. Lawsuits. More??

I love how you're trolling the other PP.

Personally, I'm sure MCPS is doing the best they can, and I refuse to raise my blood pressure for such petty details are which day kids are going to return to school... even though I'd rather it be sooner than later.

Liability?

Hard to believe but not everyone is out there looking for a lawsuit. I'm a teacher and I went and shoveled my school as much as I could these last few days. If I hurt myself doing it then that's my own dumb luck.

GOOD for YOU

Fern leaving a havoc. But only through Montgomery County.

Not only through MoCo. Even snowy counties are struggling. Do you really no no one who lives elsewhere in the state of Maryland?

If they are not cleaning over the weekend all the 211 schools, buses, depot, sidewalks, walkways, moving the huge snowbanks away, this stuff is not melting until maybe a Monday when the temp will be whopping 33 degrees. Tues delay or possibly closed if this County still can't figure it out.

They clearly stated they will be clearing parking lots and bus loops over the weekend. Who said they aren’t clearing snow over the weekend?

So overtime work for those contractors? There goes THAT $.

They all probably paid top dollar to private contractors. The county, and more specifically the school system, cannot really do that without budget meetings and votes. I mean it's not the most effective way of doing things but it's how local government pretty much everywhere is set up to operate. I have heard all the rumors that private companies have reached out to MCPS to offer help and that MCPS has ignored them but I bet that probably has to do with the fact these local companies are probably charging 500% of what they normally would.

Our small elementary school already has a small utility tractor with a snow plow. While not very practical for the parking lots, it made quick work of the sidewalks. I don't know how common that is. Even if it's unusual, they only needed to use it for a couple of hours, and those are relatively easy to transport between sites.

School sidewalks seemed to be done pretty quickly in my trip around the Germantown/Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village area. Even schools that had untouched parking lots and bus loops had cleared sidewalks

That combo is still useless.

After countless threads, yes, that has already been established.

Opposite in my part of Germantown. They cleared parking lots, but no one was showing up at the schools.

Wrong - sidewalks in the shopping center near my home have a nice block of ice but the parking lot is clear though. I had a medical appointment and I had to walk on the snow/ice since there was no sidewalk. I was anxious since I already have a bad hip and holding onto the parking meter till and was relieved when I got to the walk path beyond the sidewalk.

It made me sad when I thought about people less fortunate than I am who rely on public transportation like buses. Near the Ride on bus stop someone cleared a narrow path on the mound of snow, and the sidewalk just on either side of the stop was clear.

The way the county treats low income housing residents is disgusting. Their apartment walkways have t been shoveled yet they can't get the residents help to have management do their damn job of clearing the walking areas

Yep. With a delay Wed. Most of this isn't going to melt until maybe Thursday.

This county is ridiculous. You can walk on snow. Lots of people are doing it.

I'm genuinely curious - in apartments, are the residents supposed to clear anything besides their cars? The nurse at the doc office said she couldn't come to work the past few days because the steps and walk path to her car was not cleared.
