This is normal, OP. My kids did this as well. No one at school batted an eye. It's actually a good thing for teens to learn what to prioritize in their lives. I don't think anybody at school begrudges a high-performing kid looking to get into a good college for their absences, considering that college admissions is determined in large part by what kids do OUTSIDE of school. Schools are worried about low-performing students who skip school.

No its not normal and I don't allow it. They will not go to their activities if they get behind. Simple.

Recently, my DD's coach sent her a text -- yes, a text -- letting her know if she prioritized homework over practice, "there would be consequences". My DD went to practice and then stayed awake until 2 AM finishing HW. When I found out, I hit the roof.

Agree with PP that maybe your child is not cut out for HS sports, because that is the reality. You prioritize the sports commitments (or band or theater) you make or you can't be part of the team.

Weast allowed sexual predators to stay in classrooms. Weast took bribes from vendors and awarded massive no bid contracts. Weast used MCPS money to invest in private companies. Those investments tanked. Weast hid revenue from the County Council and robbed children. Weast sued special education parents. Weast rigged enrollment data. Weast gutted policies and made sure the Board of Education transferred power to him and him alone.

Weast was the last one who could coast based on the previous reputation of MCPS.
