Being an immigrant is tough. I’m desperate to leave but nicer places don’t want Americans and getting a visa let alone citizenship is an uphill battle.

I don't understand why Americans want to move to, particularly Europe so badly given they pay higher taxes for public services and earn a whole lot less overall. All the high-skilled people limited by their market in Europe move to the United States to earn more than they do in the old continent.

I would like to pay more taxes for public services in the US but weirdly people here don’t like the idea. So I’m planning to move to a place where there are more who think like me.

+1. I don’t like income inequality so I’m happy to make little and have more money available for redistribution.

Another +100 but it's harder than it looks. For example, right now in the uS I feel like I get ZERO say on where tax dollars go. And I pay a lot of taxes.

I’d much rather have my taxes go to nationalized programs rather than all the foreign countries the US sends it to.

I just dream about living in a country that is less political, religious, and is more educated, classy, and friendly like in a British movie. Maybe its just fantasy but that's the country I fantasize about.

What would be a statistically valid sample size for this study?

Interviewing 1008 Americans is fine, if they were randomly selected. A sample size >1000 is standard for a national poll.

"pretty good here" in what sense?

The cost of living in the US is climbing higher. We are finding it more expensive here than in the UK now. My spouse moved to the US from the UK 30 years ago, and they said it was much cheaper in the US than in the UK. Now, when we go back to the UK, we are finding it's cheaper there than here, especially the healthcare costs.

Food in Europe is better, too. They have more stringent laws around food safety; no GMO, etc.. They are less controlled by corporate greed than we are here.

The political climate here is more like a dictatorship. Rights are being eroded. Ethics being violated. It's very disturbing.

And I used to be a conservative.

I had lived in Europe and USA also. Food is definitely better. I don’t I think it is corporate greed. I think it is cultural. Food has always been better in Europe.

Healthcare is definitely cheaper, I would not say it is better.

IMO, politics, especially if you spend too much time online are terrible everywhere. There is no real news anymore. There are only Talking Heads trying to drum up divisiveness.

My DD are 14 is all about study abroad and never coming back. My DS age 16 wants to study abroad as well. Both have been paying attention to the news and A students. I have zero problem with their choices. When they leave I'm leaving too. DH is a white guy who was never about moving out of state but even he has become open to the idea of not being here.

This country is slowly but surely changing. It's not the country that was even a few yrs ago. While everything changes, our changes are horrifying. You all talk about pros and cons and not knowing how good we have it here with opportunities, freedoms and choices. Y'all understand all that's disappearing correct???!

DP. I wanted to add on to this that I think America has coasted for a long time on its reputation as being the “land of the free.” We control so much of the media (movies/music) so we’ve been portrayed as a cool place in pop culture. We have a large military and overall have become known as this powerful country. And I’m not 100% sure the rest of the world bought into this as much as we did, but as an older millennial I definitely grew up being spoon fed American exceptionalism.

But then the veil was lifted and I’m realizing we have not invested in infrastructure the way other countries have. We are not as advanced as we like to portray. Sure we have some very wealthy people and a few nice cities to give the appearance of success, but that never really trickled to the masses. Now we are going backwards re: civil rights and women’s reproductive freedom because of white Christian nationalism.

DH and I would love to leave but finding jobs, leaving elderly parents, uprooting our kids, etc. is daunting. Just thinking through it has given me even more respect for the immigrants who leave everything behind for a new start. It isn’t easy by any stretch.

Americans don’t care for food, visit Florida’s coastal villages and no one bothers to get a catch of the day from the ocean, they just cook up fried farmed chicken.

Meanwhile visit a random tropical Asian country and you see grandmas making fresh food all day long.

This isn't always or even usually true. My husband is from Germany where they charge nearly 15% of income for basic insurance, and then you buy supplemental insurance on top of that because the basic is pretty austere (shared rooms etc). Here in the US, we get insurance through his employer and insure both of us, plus our 2 kids for $250 per month. That's a great deal, but we could pay much more and still be making out ahead in the US. The US also has much better cancer detection and treatment than Europe so all in all, we are much happier with the medical situation here.
