All three of my kids wants to move overseas: DD, because of the threats to women’s rights and healthcare; DS1 because there are more academic opportunities in science overseas; DS2 because of the threat to free speech at the universities.
My DD are 14 is all about study abroad and never coming back. My DS age 16 wants to study abroad as well. Both have been paying attention to the news and A students. I have zero problem with their choices. When they leave I'm leaving too. DH is a white guy who was never about moving out of state but even he has become open to the idea of not being here. This country is slowly but surely changing. It's not the country that was even a few yrs ago. While everything changes, our changes are horrifying. You all talk about pros and cons and not knowing how good we have it here with opportunities, freedoms and choices. Y'all understand all that's disappearing correct???!
DP. I wanted to add on to this that I think America has coasted for a long time on its reputation as being the “land of the free.” We control so much of the media (movies/music) so we’ve been portrayed as a cool place in pop culture. We have a large military and overall have become known as this powerful country. And I’m not 100% sure the rest of the world bought into this as much as we did, but as an older millennial I definitely grew up being spoon fed American exceptionalism. But then the veil was lifted and I’m realizing we have not invested in infrastructure the way other countries have. We are not as advanced as we like to portray. Sure we have some very wealthy people and a few nice cities to give the appearance of success, but that never really trickled to the masses. Now we are going backwards re: civil rights and women’s reproductive freedom because of white Christian nationalism. DH and I would love to leave but finding jobs, leaving elderly parents, uprooting our kids, etc. is daunting. Just thinking through it has given me even more respect for the immigrants who leave everything behind for a new start. It isn’t easy by any stretch.
