Great colleges with fewer intense strivers

Unfortunately, I think Duke has a lot more strivers now than it used to. Which is really too bad. I think a non-striver can still be happy there if they can avoid getting sucked in.

This is satire, right?

I think it's an utter lack of self awareness. I've never met a more obnoxious group as a whole than Duke grads. They are insufferable.

Please do not lump me or my college friends in with this particular Duke grad. Thank you.

Holy Cross would be a perfect choice. Colgate has too many entitled prep school kids born on third base.

Isn’t that what OP is looking for?

Strivers = kids who memorize and regurgitate definitions, primarily for the purpose of achieving good test scores.

Diligent = kids who take the time to understand language and recognize that words are tools which we use to communicate.

I don't understand the points of differentiating Strivers and Diligents?

Anyway the goal is the become rich and powerful. One by grinding and the other by talking

I don't know you or your friends but I know a lot of Duke grads. The comment stands.

What school did you go to where everyone was so perfect? The fact that you generalize so much does not speak well of it.

Funny because in corporate America Duke alums have a reputation as being the best to work with because they have people skills, unlike Ivy League nerds, bookworms and strivers. Agree that there are plenty of D-bags from Duke, but there are many who are not.

DDMF.

I mean you - presumably a Duke alum - insulted Ivy grads "nerds, bookworms and strivers." Which proves my point of how insufferable Duke grads are.

You haven't noticed that some schools have distinctive cultures and seem to attract a certain type of person? That's been my observation. And Duke is one that I noticed a long time ago. And I'm not the only one.

Not a Duke grad. Just someone who is sick of low class losers generalizing about schools. I have several good friends who went to Duke who are some of the kindest, most down to earth people I know. I also know plenty of jerks from there. No school is perfect.

Lots of defensive strivers posting in the thread. And/or people too dumb to know what a striver is. Kind of funny. The increase in strivers is why college sucks so much these days. Good admission officers can pick them out and avoid them but there is only so much they can do.

My DS is starting at Carleton in the fall. Our impression from touring and talking to alums we know is that the vibe is more collaborative and congenial than other schools with similarly intense academics.

Our DD is also headed to Carleton next fall, and much of her decision was based on similar impressions.

Well we can't all go to Duke.

Of course you don’t. You’re an incurious striver.
