I loved playing soccer as a kid, when I hit 8th grade my parents demanded I play football which I did on and off throughout high school. Never loved it thats for sure.
With my own kids, one picked up soccer and it reignited my love of the game. Soccer is culturally more and more ingrained and the WC this summer will push it a bit more. There's no danger to football though, so firmly entrenched in the popular mindset. |
Typical DMV parent response since the world does revolve around those living here in their bubble. |
Because it’s more dangerous and I know they aren’t going to be good enough to make a living from it. Soccer is a lot more convenient as an activity. There are teams available no matter the level, fun tournaments, near year round leagues. Football is still their favorite. |
DC forum, no? |
"But football is more popular than soccer with kids" |
Where in the DMV do you live? You must not get out much. Walk into any Dicks and see how many soccer jerseys are for sale compared to other sports. You think stores would stock what doesn’t sell? |
DC attitude, yes |
No athlete plays American football any more. |
LOL, the impressive stats from the NFL combine would argue differently |
That's the real difference though, if you are taller/larger and athletic you can start playing football in your teens and become extremely successful. Soccer you really need to start at a younger age. |

Look nerd kid parents. Yes. Starting earlier, helps. A kid who's athletic is ALWAYS going to be better eventually than Larlo at some point. If they start playing and become dedicated.
I know many of you are like, "What about Messi? He is small." He is also a world class athlete. Most of our kids, statistically all, are not. You hate it but it's true. Being bigger, stronger and faster in basically every sport gives you an advantage. For those of you saying NFL players aren't athletic, you have no idea. I worked with a guy who was on the Falcons practice squard for a couple of years, so not even a top player. He was older and not in playing shape and he still could do things athletically we all wish we, or our kids, wish we could do. As for why some of you insist you prefer soccer uber alles, I'm convinced it's because you find it easier to dad or mom coach. In football you are separated from the field too much. You can't give your kid your "expert" advice as easily. |
When you can show me an offensive or defensive lineman who can run, sprint, jump, change directions quickly while executing technical skills for 90 minutes, then we can compare football to soccer overall athletic qualities Bigger faster stronger has limited applications in sports requiring highly technical skills and high IQ |
This is a good point. Marching bands are so large, you could see half the parents in attendance and know that they are there for their child in the band. Or they could have one in football, one in band, or one in cheerleading. Etc. |
Now ask yourself why all those groups are at the football game instead of the soccer game (or any other sport for that matter). |
Some exceptions man. Track star on the football team. Soccer player on the football team. Running backs |
