You dodged a bullet. NYC is going from bad to worse soon, despite what the naive useful idiots are posting here.

No it is not.

Shut up.

NYU is a great school.

I have started to think that all the anti-Northeast schools and cities and pro-SEC schools and lifestyle are from people trying to eliminate competition.

Bingo. All the pro-SEC people each spring are the ones who were deferred or rejected from NE schools or UVA in state a few months before

Apparently you’ve never strolled around a beautiful SEC campus in February when it is 55 degrees.

and what about the 90+ degree, 90% humidity May to Sept?

I just read an article about why so many NE kids are going to SEC. A lot has to do with social media, and apparently the RushTok videos. They typically tend to be blonde blue eyed people. It's not about education; it's about being seen.

https://www.vox.com/culture/471431/bama-rush-sec-universities-tiktok-alabama-ole-miss-fraternities

Neither of my kids are those types, and VA is as far south as they go. They also hate the humid weather.

I know kids who got sucked in by TikTok but didn't like the southern schools once they got there.

We have family in Georgia and have visited often. My DS is familiar with the South and declined to apply to any schools there for reasons that have little to do with the quality of education. He was not a social fit for them.

A close friend’s daughter had UGA basically at the top of her list. This girl is smart, attractive and by all accounts popular and a partier. She got into UGA but went and visited for the weekend and she thought the female social scene felt too intense there - she said the girls seemed too dressed up, felt extremely wealthy and she couldn’t see herself fitting in. Went to a northern OOS flagship instead.

Pretty bummed because there aren't going to be a lot of good options coming DC's way (TO, 3.7 W GPA). We are in state Virginia so will try for some of those state schools that are perfectly fine.

Different poster but same here, DC got PS Altoona 2+2 so we’re turning that down. It was a reach and kid isn’t too upset. Lower GPA (3.5w in FCPS) Was asked for mid year grades at Pitt and Delaware. Accepted already at Michigan State so that’s a plus.

We are waiting on some smaller, less selective schools in VA, and more OOS. Also some other reaches. I’m just hoping DC is happy with the options they have at the end.

Michigan State is a great option!

Last year my son got Penn State Altoona but also got in to Virginia Tech. Go figure.

Were you in state VA or OOS? What major?

DS was deferred by Rose Hulman for mechanical engineering. He has a 4.3w and they asked to see his semester grades.
Even though their admit rate is very high, when you look closer 60+% have a 4.0uw.
Ds was disappointed but fortunately it’s not his top choice.

1540 SAT (one and done,) 4.95w (4.0w), lots of AP/IB/DE classes including MV Calc, Diff Eq, Linear Algebra.
Great essays and recs
Good ECs but nothing earth-shattering -- which is why they were never expecting to get in and why we're not really sad about it. They wanted to shoot their shot, and now focused on a large, balanced list of RDs

PP, why not consedering ED2 with such a high stat profile?

I am rooting for your DD, wishing her very best!! I actually think that these top schools like Stanford purposely and randomly reject some high stat kids in order to be seen as extremely selective (therefore desirable) and keep the admission process even more opaque while hiding behind the veil of "institutional demand" and "holistic approach".

Accepted Penn State Smeal and alternate campus at Pitt.

Deferred from UVA. Very unlikely admit as kid has a B in AP Physics 2 and AP Calc BC in senior year so far. Has 5 acceptances so far, but not really excited about any of them. Struggling for other RD options. Looking for a smaller engineering program within a larger campus with athletics, clubs, etc. VT is second choice, but really concerned about the size of the engineering program and getting lost. UVA was just right. Sigh. Does not want a smaller, technical school like WPI or Rose. Limited to east coast and possibly mid-west. Any suggestions? 3.8 uw / 4.3 w/1460 SAT

What are the five acceptances?
Since you mention being open to Midwest, how about Case? Rochester?

You realize most students aren’t on campus from mid-May to late August?

I went to SEC schools for both college and grad school. Humidity wasn’t an issue given the time of year I was there, and above all else, I appreciated the sunny, mild winters and the early springs!!

The very south is humid from Apr to Oct. Some people don't mind it, but we can't even stand DC area humidity.

https://www.wunderground.com/history/monthly/us/al/tuscaloosa/KTCL/date/2025-4

Also, if the students aren't in the south for the summer that means that 1. they couldn't get internships at all or 2. they can only get internships elsewhere, which means jobs are elsewhere, which means, the south still pretty much sucks for jobs for those students.

We are in-state in the south and my DD will be paying $5K/year to attend the flagship, which is in the mountains and not particularly humid. I'm pretty psyched. I actually don't think getting a job is the main point of college, but I have zero concerns about that. Great university with tons of resources, great social scene, a few hours from home and great price tag. I went to a top DC private and the university that DCUM is most obsessed with, btw.

I would give VT serious consideration. People seem to find their place there somehow so even though it’s large, maybe they have the size well designed.

In at Penn State, Pitt, Delaware, Auburn and Clemson so far. It may just be a case of disappointment and decision paralysis as opposed to not appreciating her options. I am going to encourage her to apply to Case. I think Rochester maybe a bit too far north and cold for her. She also wants to apply to UGA. Looking for one or two more good possibilities. My older DD was only interested in ACC and SEC schools so these schools are my primary knowledge base. Very open to other suggestions.

Then they are in for a rude awakening in the good ole state of VA!

Try Rochester or Case Western. I know that Rochester is 6K people and most classes have fewer than 30 per class. It's not a big sports/party scene though.
