You dodged a bullet. NYC is going from bad to worse soon, despite what the naive useful idiots are posting here.

No it is not.

Shut up.

NYU is a great school.

I have started to think that all the anti-Northeast schools and cities and pro-SEC schools and lifestyle are from people trying to eliminate competition.

Bingo. All the pro-SEC people each spring are the ones who were deferred or rejected from NE schools or UVA in state a few months before

Apparently you’ve never strolled around a beautiful SEC campus in February when it is 55 degrees.

and what about the 90+ degree, 90% humidity May to Sept?

I just read an article about why so many NE kids are going to SEC. A lot has to do with social media, and apparently the RushTok videos. They typically tend to be blonde blue eyed people. It's not about education; it's about being seen.

Neither of my kids are those types, and VA is as far south as they go. They also hate the humid weather.

I know kids who got sucked in by TikTok but didn't like the southern schools once they got there.

You realize most students aren’t on campus from mid-May to late August?

I went to SEC schools for both college and grad school. Humidity wasn’t an issue given the time of year I was there, and above all else, I appreciated the sunny, mild winters and the early springs!!

The very south is humid from Apr to Oct. Some people don't mind it, but we can't even stand DC area humidity.

Also, if the students aren't in the south for the summer that means that 1. they couldn't get internships at all or 2. they can only get internships elsewhere, which means jobs are elsewhere, which means, the south still pretty much sucks for jobs for those students.

Great essays and recs
Good ECs but nothing earth-shattering -- which is why they were never expecting to get in and why we're not really sad about it. They wanted to shoot their shot, and now focused on a large, balanced list of RDs

Major? I’m sure they’ll do great in RD. Good luck!!

Engineering (BME.) Tough -- but not sorry she tried. There's some comfort in knowing and not wondering what-if, yk?

Thanks for the kind words!

I absolutely agree!!

Our DD with similar stats took her ED shot with a different T10 school. She hasn’t heard yet, but either way, I’m really proud of her for going for it. She’s a great kid whose instinct is sometimes to play it safe/small rather than risk rejection/vulnerability.

It’ll sting if she’s rejected after fully owning that this school is her “first choice”. But kids can’t grow if they always play it safe to protect themselves from setbacks/“failure”/disappointment. True resilience comes from realizing they’re actually strong enough to handle those things (and then some!) It may hurt, but it’s not so bad that they need to avoid or even fear the risk.

I get that this isn’t hard for some kids. But for mine, it’s turned out to be a huge growth milestone. Cheers to every kid who took a big swing at ED. If it doesn’t go their way, it can be a lot to sit with until RD decisions comes out, but a big growth opportunity, too!

Agree, the best thing about this process is watching your DC grow and seeing how they make decisions/strategize. It will all work out

Anticipating DC getting rejected from university of Tennessee today. EA for OOS comes out today. We shall see.

We have family in Georgia and have visited often. My DS is familiar with the South and declined to apply to any schools there for reasons that have little to do with the quality of education. He was not a social fit for them.

Same for DS.

Why is UVA so impossible to get into?

I think UVA is more unpredictable than has a hard floor. Plenty of kids with more average stats get in since its a public school and they’re supposed to educate students from the state. Could be worse. Could be like the UCs where it seems like they pick names out of a hat. And that’s how you get UCSDs whole math score fiasco

I don’t know where this comes from. In Sacramento, the UC school hierarchy for admitting students is pretty straightforward as are the institutional priorities. If you want to get into Cal or UCLA, there is an expectation of high performance.

I completely agree with this assessment. DC (FCPS) was accepted to UCSD and we toured and were so unimpressed by the school, the students, the tour guide - all of it. I know it is highly ranked, but cannot figure out how.

But then you’re stuck in a shthole red state for 9 months of the year.

Rejected from Penn State, got Penn State Altoona. This is a very average (real average, not DCUM average) student from FCPS. Pretty bummed because there aren't going to be a lot of good options coming DC's way (TO, 3.7 W GPA). We are in state Virginia so will try for some of those state schools that are perfectly fine.

Your DC will get automatic merit at WVU. It’s closer to Fairfax than a lot of Virginia schools. And has more Penn State like features than some of those perfectly fine Virginia state options.
