Is your daughter's work event in Spain? I can't tell if you mean it's a good coincidence or an ill-timed one.

In any case, you are not obligated to go to his, and any combination of your family (which is no longer really nuclear beacuse your kids are out of the house) is fine, as is 0 of you going because it's far and expensive. Especially since you already went to the REAL wedding! This seems like it's for her family, which is nice if they didn't get to go the first time.

Of course people do - I'm an academic. There are certain conferences that would have been terrible to not attend pre-tenure.
