Just say it's not appropriate for a 14-year-old. She can get them when she is 18, but hard no for now.
Except she sees so many other 14 year old with fake nails. So how come it’s appropriate for them but not her?
Because they have weak and/or clueless parents
This |
There are some realllll sticks in the mud on this board that think any other piercing than just one ear lobe piercing is trashy, and all nail polish too. Except maybeee a very light pink. It’s a sad way to live. |
| I hate seeing fake nails on young teens. There's no reason a middle school kid should be at the salon getting artificial nails. In high school, we were OK with it for special occations - hoco, prom & vacation. I have gotten them and hate them. It's so much harder to take out contacts and they kind of gross me out thanks to years working in a hospital. Fortunately, glue on nails are so much better than they used to be and my kid will use those now when she wants special nails. They are cheaper, don't require a lot of upkeep and don't leave the nails super weak if you remove them the right way. |
| Op come back and update us. Did you come to some compromise with the press ons or semi cured gels people recommended? |
| As an ER doctor I routinely remove these when girls come in having ripped the nail off getting dressed, playing sports, or just horsing around. Happens mostly with the super long ones; I’ve also had a girl come in with acrylic toenails (shudder). In most cases it rips the native nail off the bed and the whole thing bleeds. I now keep an acrylic nail trimmer in my bag because this happens with some frequency. This was the explanation I gave to my 13 yo DD who wanted acrylics. I also showed her some pictures. That ended that request quickly. |
| ETA it seems like the safest option is the ones the girls can do at home bc the glue isn’t as strong. |
ok but there are NUMEROUS options these days to do your nails at home that people have pointed out that is a happy medium between going to the salon and getting long pointy acrylics and doing nothing. There is some very nice nail polish out there that lasts longer than your drugstore polishes, press on nails (these have come far since the KISS nails we're all familiar with), and my personal favorite the semi cured gel. OPs daughter can "have her nails done" using one of these options but it seems like OP just wants to say no. I personally use semi cured gels and I keep my nails quite short. I am pretty sure I am in no more danger of having my whole nail ripped off than someone who is wearing nailpolish. |

The Glamnetics work pretty well. Depending how you care for them, they can last 2 weeks. If you remove properly they don't destroy your nails.
Easy compromise. |

Wow, who knew there were so many nail options. Seems like a lot of work… keep up, the applying/painting and the working to pay for it all. I appreciate the ER doc’s post. I would do that- show DD graphic pics of torn off nails, cancer, etc.
Then again I don’t wear any fake nails. I’ll use regular nail polish on rare occasion. I just don’t notice or care about other people’s nails. And the long fake ones on other women just weird me out. As a physician/surgeon… nails like that are a breeding ground for gross germs… just telling it like it is. |
| Just get fancy press on nails from ulta and some nail glue. |
Lol. You can get a box of semi cured gels off amazon for 8-9 if you watch for a sale. That gets you two manicures that don’t take much time to apply. Some of you guys I guess just hate anything nail related. |
| Can’t they just paint their own nails? |
Acrylics can have designs and also last longer than polish, so if OPs daughter is asking for “fake nails” she’s likely not wanting polish. Or for all we know op is such a stick in the mud she doesn’t allow polish either. |
It’s just a waste of time. |
