Why must people burn wood???

Anonymous
When the power went out one morning, I went to my fire pit and cooked breakfast and made French-pressed coffee using water I boiled over the fire.

There are no HOA Nazis to bother me about my carbon footprint (I don’t give a flying flip—call me Big Foot!) and a fire is cheerful, part of my pursuit of happiness which is my constitutional right.

Who are you OP?! Are you actually seriously suggesting making a fire to cozy up to for families is a problem given the other 1000000 prob we have? Is this a joke?!

No doubt you do something that annoys your neighbors, co-workers, etc. but they understand living in a society means inconveniences caused by others so they don’t say anything.

And drop the transparently self-serving argument about the cancer risks to your neighbors. You don’t care.

Man, I do NOT miss how you used to call the DC fire dep't when we would have a barbeque or small backyard fire, pretending you saw smoke and 'thought there was an uncontrolled fire'. You wasted city resources because you wanted to have control over what we did in our yard.

Not pouting because you weren't invited, looking away and enjoying your own home IS an option.

Np. Did we have the same neighbor?

Thanks. This is a good example. What would the morons posting in this thread say if it wasn't about wood smoke, but about a constant backyard smoker? Is that still "OK"?

Smoke from any source may be annoying and pose risks to your health, but if your neighbor isn’t doing anything illegal or in violation of any HOA bylaws, what are you gonna do about it? Most of us have been on both sides of the annoying neighbor equation, sometimes being annoyed and sometimes being the annoying one.

Open fires are inefficient

Most people In the DC area heat with central heating. Walking around my neighborhood in winter I seldom smell smoke.

However I grew up in a place where people used wood and coal burners. During thermal inversions the city had a layer of smog that looked like a layer of bread mold. Asthma rates there were so high. When I took my kids for a visit, we had to abandon our walk after a couple of minutes. There's nothing cosy about that. The government has worked to ban fires for health reasons.

I wish I had a fireplace. I turned my fake fireplace on and it blew the fuse as I also used a small hair dryer at the same time.

You are deranged. But thanks to your unhinged rants I will build a wonderful fire this weekend. Hope I’m your neighbor.

Unreal what this site has become. I'm going to start preparing for a nice big firepit fire this weekend thanks to this idiotic thread.

Enjoy your cancer.

GenX and still going strong.

Enjoy your health anxiety.

Science illiteracy… there is a short term carbon cycle, which includes photosynthesis, plant growth, decomposition and cellular respiration. That cycle does not contribute to “the climate crisis.” Bringing “new” carbon into the atmosphere from long term sinks is what you would be concerned about. Burning a log is part of the former.

Does it make people feel cozy and happy burning wood in the near summer? I find it super annoying to have to breathe in smoke being outside and not be able to open the windows. Come on!!! Please stop!

No matter the temp, it’s wrong to have a backyard fire. Or indoor for that matter. The carbon footprint is huge!

Plus, you can find videos of fires for your giant-screen TV for free. Why not?

It’s precious that you think this is any kind of valid substitute. Bless your heart.
