| Can someone explain why, when it gets under 80 degrees, people feel the need to start fires in their fireplaces or fire pits? It’s horribly polluting and it’s not even cold. Does it make people feel cozy and happy burning wood in the near summer? I find it super annoying to have to breathe in smoke being outside and not be able to open the windows. Come on!!! Please stop! |

Where do you live and how dense is it, that this is such a concern?
I like the smell because yes it has that cozy vibe. I will occasionally smell a fire pit while walking outside but almost never in my home with windows open. And my neighborhood is pretty dense. |
| Yes, it’s incredibly cozy and you’re super annoying. Go away. |
| I like the smell. And though not right now, the warmth is cozy. |
| Better than smelling burning tires, plastics, trash, exhaust, etc. |

Maria, from our old neighbourhood, is that you?
Man, I do NOT miss how you used to call the DC fire dep't when we would have a barbeque or small backyard fire, pretending you saw smoke and 'thought there was an uncontrolled fire'. You wasted city resources because you wanted to have control over what we did in our yard. Not pouting because you weren't invited, looking away and enjoying your own home IS an option. |
| I burn wood in a burn barrel when it gets cold. Good way to clean up yard waste (fallen branches). I think it smells good. |
| Not your property, not your business. |
| I can’t speak for everyone, but yes, a wood fire makes me feel cozy and happy. Whether from snuggling in front of a fireplace in the winter or roasting marshmallows over a campfire in the summer, I have lots of happy associations with wood fires. I think over the thousands of years of humanity’s existence, it has become a universal symbol of safety and comfort, which is why we talk of hearth and home. I don’t currently have a wood fireplace, but I enjoy smelling other people’s fires when I pass their house on a walk. |
| Because it's a cheap and efficient way to heat. |
| OP I sympathize. I’ve never understood why people don’t consider the health risks of wood smoke. It has high amounts of fine particulate, not very good for anyone to breathe (and of course not good for the environment). There are several US cities that have banned fire pits etc I’ve noticed a trend on social media of health influencers warning against using scented candles, I wonder how many of them still sit around fire pits. |
Thank you…fire and smoke lovers, inhale smoke all you like but I wish you wouldn’t force everyone around to inhale your smoke and pollute the environment for some cute cozy feelings. Put up one of those TV video fires or get a gas fireplace (still not great but at least it’s not smoky) and call it a day. (Yeah I know no one will change, but needed a vent after I just had to close all my windows from the smoke coming in. It’s not even cold!!!) |
That’s not the alternative…how about fresh air and plants? People are not burning that stuff regularly in DMV neighborhoods where DCUM posters live. |
Close your windows and STFU. |
