What are the academic programs each WASP is known for?

Amherst- Biology, Legal Studies, Psychology, Architecture

Pomona- Cognitive Science and Linguistics, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Media Studies, Public Policy Analysis

Swarthmore- Education, Engineering, Computer Science, Philosophy

Williams- English, Economics, Art, History

So basically sophomore students actually help the world while the rest of these grads are entitled or actively destroying it.

Yup. All those bio majors at Amherst and Pomona who become doctors and prevent stupid people like you from dying are really destroying the world. And the architects at Amherst who designed your mom's house so you can sit in the basement in a wife beater drinking a Coors Light and type stupidity.

The architectural studies degree is useless and doesn’t make you a licensed architect- you need a BArch. It’s basically an urban studies degree for pre-planners with too much time and money on their hands. Many of these bio majors at these liberal arts colleges are going to grad school to solve some nonsensical minor biological problem that will not amount to anything a doctor does.

You just keep making yourself sound dumber and dumber. "Solve some nonsensical minor biological problem?" Like perhaps cure diseases? If on your next trip to the doctor or hospital you want to say "sorry, please don't prescribe me any medicines or procedures that might have been even partially created by a liberal arts college grad" go ahead. Perhaps that will cull another low IQ person from the gene pool.

Some people like to try to show how clever they are and just advertise their stupidity in the process.

They were clearly talking about the Williams Econ bros-who definitely make the world a worse place. Architecture and Media Studies at a liberal arts college is straight up a waste of a degree.

"A waste of a degree?" Who are you to judge? The rampant pre-professionalism is truly destroying this country - it is such a low class mentality. And it is none of your business what someone studies.

Opinions are like butt holes. Everyone's got one.

It is a shame that the ignorant idiots are crowding out those who have a brain and actually want to help people. But this is America in 2025.

So they are all useless and do not deserve college degrees? Only engineers deserve degrees because that is super practical? OMFG. If this is the way your brain works, you should be far, far away from a thread about liberal arts colleges as you clearly have no understanding of how they work. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. The reason I am strongly considering a liberal arts college for my children is to stay away from people like you.

Waiting for your "I know you are but what am I" whataboutism...

You say after assuming all the bio majors are doctors-a pre-professional path. Right...

No. You made a blanket statement saying they are all useless. I said that at least some were doing work that any idiot would consider "useful" - I did not say all. Way to contort what I said. Please leave this thread. You are ruining it. You clearly are not bright enough to consider these schools anyway. You likely couldn't find them on a map. And you clearly think they are all awful. So go away. Low class trash.

Wow, looney tunes over here. Also extremely classist, while likely being poor. Sensing a lot of insecurity

What does that mean? Amherst also seems to have very few permanent faculty and dedicated faculty to neuroscience.

With respect to the economics departments of Williams and Amherst, their faculty contribute research papers to economics journals at a rate greater than that of the faculty at some national universities over ten times their size.

They really don’t. The RePEc lists have multiple lists for this kind of thing, including ones that weight by the number of authors. Williams doesn’t crack the top 100 on any list. Amherst isn’t in the top 500.

Which is fine. They are LACs and they aren’t expected to. But let’s not overstate it.

Agree with the other poster though that Williams > Amherst in this field.

Williams does and Amherst is:

How is that classist? Do you even know what that means? Or just throwing out words you heard somewhere to try to act smart when actually advertising your stupidity.

I wish all of the people who go through all of these ridiculous mental gymnastics to be nasty and put down people and schools would channel all of that mental energy towards being constructive, useful and making the world a better place. But I think that is too much to ask.

I think there are a lot of people here who are struggling to differentiate liberal arts schools that tend to look extremely similar, and have very nuanced differences. Which is very reasonable and makes a lot of sense. And how one perceives those differences depends a lot on one's own very personal frame of reference, so that doesn't always translate well here. But it is kind of people to try to help, and those who disagree should do so in a helpful way.

But what do I know.

Agreed. You generally go to a SLAC for a well-rounded liberal arts education (which unfortunately no longer seems to be valued). Learn how to think. So though some might theoretically be better than others in particular areas, if you are going to college because you want to be 100% focused on bio or Spanish or Econ, these probably aren’t the places for you.

I work on Wall Street and I prefer to hire smart SLAC grads of all majors and we will teach them what we want them to know. Then when the world changes and they need to adapt, they tend to be the best at doing so. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer people agree with me.

Also agree. I would take one of these any day over some suck-up member of the ponzi scheme pre-business club at another school who thinks they are saying all of the right things but actually sounds like a total phony. On day one at my bank they might seem really smart but the smart liberal arts kid will blow by them very quickly and no one will want to work with them because they are insufferable.

Except “your” bank is filled with these people. Your in quotes because this comment sounds like it actually came from a current LAC student.
