Not all men are predators, but basically all predators are men. And women who commit violent acts are usually abuse survivors of men. If you don't understand why a woman who encountered a strange man in the woods would be scared, you are insane. At least the bear lives there and might just be going about its business. The man is probably up to no good.

What an insight. Now do race and crime and come back to us.

OK, sure. I only hire Latinos to clean my house. I am scared of both the black and the white people (usually women) who do this job. I am white. This comes from years of experience. I don't feel bad about it. A lot of this goes back to the men that the housekeepers could be involved with--I don't want those men coming near my house. So it really all comes back to men even when it starts out with race.

Almost missed it but it sounds like you chose Latina over black women for the job? Based on their race?

It sounds like your fear comes down to economic class.

Um that’s not what she said…. She is cool with the Latinas but not the Blacks.

Or the whites.

Well, yes, for Americans. Immigrants are fine, as are their kids. Seriously.

I’m not a man and I feel attacked by this idea. The notion that half of our population is so inherently dangerous that we would rather be with a large, dangerous wild animal is so out of line with reality that it blows my mind.

You sound like a predatory fragile ego man.

I guess it’s nice your reality is different than the vast majority of women. But that doesn’t negate the other billions of women’s’ experiences.

I used to think woman vs bear was obvious but having read this thread I’m not sure anymore.

It’s all misandry. That’s all you need to know.

The entire trope seems extremely misandrist.

Yes. It’s fine to say you don’t want to encounter a man in the woods, but don’t you dare say you don’t want to encounter a gang of 3 18 year old urban black girls walking down U St. then you’re racist.

Sure, predatory men with fragile egos may be offended. And also anyone with a basic understanding of statistics and above average intelligence.

Billions of women don’t get sexually assaulted by every man they see.

A perceptive comment. PP states that she has a statistical basis for preferring the bear. (Which is objectively crazy and offensive on its face.) But if we were to apply the same logic to race, given that statistically the Black share of crime is very large relative to the Black percentage of the population, we would rightfully recoil.

Then the subsequent poster (PP again?), as if on cue, clarifies that misandry and racism are in fact quite close cousins.

I am a woman and my experience is in line with most of the women I know. I even had almost exclusively male babysitters who often were black. Shocking but true.

We all have to live our lives based on experience/statistics and "stereotypes" come into play. I used to tell my kids to ask a mom for help (never a single man). And I choose the bear. And I hire latinos to work in my house. Sue me.

You don’t know a single woman harassed or hurt by a man? I’m calling BS. That’s just… false.

Definitely not hurt. Harassed? That’s subjective.
