Choose the bear" is a phrase referring to a viral social media trend where women are asked to choose between being alone in the woods with a bear or a strange man. Almost universally, women choose the bear, stating it's a more predictable and less frightening choice than a man.

Picked up by women asking their husbands if they'd prefer their lost daughters in the woods to encounter a bear or a strange man. The men pick the bear for that too.

Well you don’t really have a choice if it’s bear week.

A "bear" is a type of gay man. It is not about sex. It is like a type, like how "twink" is a type.

What do you think someone does with a bear or a twink?

Just shows that stupidity isn’t gender specific. That’s equality for ya.

Yeah, you should teach them a lesson 'bout that.

The entire trope seems extremely misandrist.

Agree. I hate lumping any demographic. I get the concept but overwhelmingly, men will help you. I realize those few who won't are bad news. But the relative risk is very low.

There is an old romance novel that jazzes up the idea of choosing the bear. I thought it was hilarious that it seemed to regain popularity/exposure during the man/bear debate.

Does anyone remember that episode of Northern Exposure where Maggie falls in love with that man living in a cave, and he turns out to be an actual bear?

All that means is that they asked men who don’t go outdoors much. If they had a daughter lost in the woods IRL, heck yeah they’d want them to run into a man.

I saw a video of a woman asking her husband how safe he’d feel in a prison shower. Would he choose prison shower or bear? He absolutely picked the bear, and had some tiny revelation of what thought process women go through while evaluating safety.

Her husband is unfamiliar with bears.

Not really. Just because you don’t agree doesn’t mean other people can’t have a different view. Are you the mansplainer from above? You’re not doing a good job of making women feel safer with men when you continually ridicule and make sexual assault jokes. Just makes the bear point even stronger really 🤷‍♀️

Why do men get upset about this meme? Literally they are the biggest danger to women and other men. They commit almost all violent crime. Not all men are predators, but basically all predators are men. And women who commit violent acts are usually abuse survivors of men. If you don't understand why a woman who encountered a strange man in the woods would be scared, you are insane. At least the bear lives there and might just be going about its business. The man is probably up to no good.
