At least, as a student, you will have no trouble getting tickets to games.

Nobody goes to games, it’s really sad. UVA lost to JMU which was the final straw for the few that actually still went to games.

Plenty attend UVA football games. Love it when the Cavalier rides out with the sword held high on that beautiful horse. Give it a rest, buddy.

“Plenty” meaning the upper deck has been empty for years.

We always have a great time at the games. Lots of school spirit. Go Hoos!

Why can’t they fill the stadium? Seriously, it’s a bad look.

The team sucks and has for decades.

I went to UIUC and it was the same thing. They were good in the 1980s and the stadium was full, then they just sucked for 30 years and kids, alums and locals have better things to do with their time.

It is same with the Commanders, they were terrible for a long time the stadium had been half empty for years until last year.

If UVA is any good, the fans will come out. It isn't like VT where they were awesome for like 20 years and just recently started being terrible. The VT fans know they can turn things around if things break their way, but UVA fans have no memories of their glory years.

It seems a bit sad that the measure of higher education for many is how good the football team is and whether the stadium is full.

Nobody said it’s the measure of higher education but you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think it matters for school spirit and overall excitement. A winning program creates a buzz, the opposite of the depressing description of UVa from a PP.

That word, “buzz” certainly is a priority at UVA, though perhaps not in the way you intended.

There's a definite cutthroat atmosphere for meaningless club positions. Graduates have a chip on their shoulder and no real skills beyond networking with other equally insufferable alums. It's an average state school...great PR team though.

I had plenty of classmates who chose UVA over the Ivys they got into. For some, it was financial, but for others they appreciated the school spirit, the larger community and variety of experiences available, and the opportunity to access top notch academics without the pressure cooker Ivy mentality

When I think of an option to an Ivy, UVA doesn't seem like the next logical step. Sorry. Very good state school though.

If you live in Virginia it's a pretty good option if you don't get into Ivy. It's somewhere below UMich and above UNC or Texas. I generaslly don't think most of the schools in between are worth the sticker price.

UVA was the obvious choice for our high achieving DD. We are a middle income household NOVA family and she attended a lower ranked FCPS high school. It is the best school our money could buy! She applied ED, and loves it!

People willing to pay a lot for a NOVA 2.0 HS experience.

so stupid. My kids are from NOVA and attended UVA. They have no college friends from NOVA. Their best friends are from MA and OH respectfully. They went to a smaller school in the burbs and for their class, it's the top 5% who get in and largely a good amount of them do attend. Why? because it's a great School, inexpensive, two hours away which is somewhat perfect, and large enough to find friends in all capacities. The professors and academic have been great. they've gotten great internships and I have to think a large part of that is the name recognition.

I think its a great school for the right kid. It is very preppy and country clubish. My DC is a camp counselor this summer and literally was talking to a fellow counselor today who is a current student at UVA. My DC asked her about what the campus culture was like and the above is a direct quote from the kid. FWIW, the kid seems happy there, but it 100% has a certain vibe that will not be a great fit for all students.

I think this is accurate. I’ve heard it can be tough to find a social niche if you don’t fit the traditional mold.

Now that I have been here over a decade, I get it, it's super prestigious and incredibly hard to get into.

Please explain to me why it is so prestigious, and why if my kid gets in, they should automatically take it (cost not a factor). My spouse is pushing it hard. I would never say this out loud, but to me it feels like all the smartest kids at all the northern Virginia schools go to UVA, making it a place of sharp elbows. I've heard it's hard to even join clubs there because everything is so competitive. Tell me why it is a great school - are the professors great? Campus seems fine to me, but I have seen prettier. What makes it so much better than other state universities? I get the William and Mary thing because it's this small, public liberal arts school.

I don't want to start a huge argument. Please just educate me on what makes UVA so strong. Why do your kids who go there love it? What do they love about it that is unique to UVA?
If you think the elbows are sharp at UVA, you should look at Harvard
