Given FL population > 3 times that of Virginia and assuming
1 Same percentage of smart/ hardworking students
2 propensity to enroll at their respective flagship is similar (based on rank and financial considerations)

Then one must deduce : the FL smarter student population > UVA’s

1. Is not true - many smart, high achievers move to VA and have similarly smart, high achieving kids. That is not true for FL.

I mean, one could make the same observation about UMCP, slightly higher acceptance rate notwithstanding.

Now that I have been here over a decade, I get it, it's super prestigious and incredibly hard to get into.

Please explain to me why it is so prestigious, and why if my kid gets in, they should automatically take it (cost not a factor). My spouse is pushing it hard. I would never say this out loud, but to me it feels like all the smartest kids at all the northern Virginia schools go to UVA, making it a place of sharp elbows. I've heard it's hard to even join clubs there because everything is so competitive. Tell me why it is a great school - are the professors great? Campus seems fine to me, but I have seen prettier. What makes it so much better than other state universities? I get the William and Mary thing because it's this small, public liberal arts school.

I don't want to start a huge argument. Please just educate me on what makes UVA so strong. Why do your kids who go there love it? What do they love about it that is unique to UVA?
If you think the elbows are sharp at UVA, you should look at Harvard

I don't see Harvard grads using their elbows on other colleges. They don't have to.

Harvard grads look down on literally every other college in the world.

That reality is a natural result of all other universities in the U.S. being inferior to Harvard.

Harvard alumns may think that, but I don't see it. What I do see on DCUM is all sorts of shade being cast by supporters of other schools.

Except this isn’t a thread about UMPC.

UMCP is ugly and stuck in the land of strip malls. You can tell me ad nauseam that this isn't true, that it doesn't matter, that it certainly isn't worth extra money to avoid etc, etc but the fact is that it's a view held by many and that many are willing to pay extra money to make a different choice for college based upon it.

+1 The entire VA big 3 is better than college park.

With views like this, there's only one choice

True. And the Oxford or Cambridge grad will hold a stiff upper lip in public, nothing visible, but secretly chortle inside about the Harvard grad putting on airs.

As there is no way to verify what school anyone went to, this is totally meaningless.

True, but I don't see people on DCUM trying to insert Harvard into every conversation to say it is superior to the other schools being discussed like you do for so many others discussed here.
