EVERY upper middle class tween and teen girl wearing booty shorts

Eh. When I was growing up in the 70's and early 80's, it was short dolphin shorts that most of the girls were wearing...

I avert my eyes! I don’t want to see anyone’s butt cheek.

Why avert their eyes? If it's okay for the girls to dress that way, surely it's okay for us to see them dressed that way.

This is kind of like the old Clinton abortion line, that abortion should be safe, legal, and rare. Why rare? If it's not killing a baby, why should it be rare?

It should be rare because nobody should have an unplanned pregnancy and have to make the decision or be sexually assaulted and have to make the decision…not because of your bullshit logic.

Dont you also agree that it should be safe, legal and rare that you have to amputate a limb?

I hate this so much. More than any other trend it strikes me as a giant trick the patriarchy has played on young girls/women to get them to wear the most uncomfortable and ill-fitting-for-the-activity swimsuit. I was very irritated that even Title 9 has cheeky bathing suits that are purportedly for 'surfing.'

The short shorts don't bother me. I think the really short ones where your butt cheeks are exposed and touching the public seat of wherever you're sitting is gross, but that's a hygiene issue.

I agree PP. Don't care as long as all the junk and cheeks are covered. But if your cheeks are hanging out, it grosses me out a bit.

And all the people saying people are perverts for noticing cheeks hanging out are full of it. We are all human and conditioned to cover our butts from a young age, so when you see cheek of any age hanging out, you notice. It's not necessarily a sexual thing.

Every year around this time of year, the pearl clutchers come out.

It is a battle that I choose not to pick. Looking around, it appears most of the other parents feel the same.

That being said, my DD is an older teen and purchases that type of clothing herself. I also did not allow when she was younger.

I wore terribly heavily makeup (looked awful) and “grunge” style of clothing when I was my DD’s age. My mom never said a word. It was a phase that did not last.

This is clearly some fashion trend? I thought modesty was trending, evidently not. Either sporty form-fitting spandex shorts (that leaves nothing to the imagination) or designer-looking cut-offs up to their lower butt cheek. Some girls looked elementary school aged riding electric scooters in booty shorts. What in the heck, do parents just not care anymore?

No MAGA "modesty is not "trending"

Go back to the hole you climbed out of.

MYOB and grow up.

I saw two girls who were maybe 16-19 at WF over the weekend casually wearing sun dresses and they looked stunning. Exponentially better and classier than booty shorts like some low self esteem teen trollop.

You lost me at bike shorts. These are just an alternative form of athletic shorts. But I don’t support daisy dukes or butt cheek hanging out

I’m shocked that they would want to go to school and sit in close proximity to others with their butt cheek edges hanging out all day.

Thank God for uniforms!

And as others have said - not a class issue - fancy private school kids have them under their skirts, which come off the moment they get home, exposing their way too short shorts. I sigh because my older girls do this and now my 9 year old is rolling her shorts to make them shorter.

My 13yo wears them too short. I call her out, but what am I going to do, hold her down and put new shorts on her?

Her excuse, this is my time to look good. Lol.

+1 And yet the boys wear shorts down to their knees. It’s quite the contrast.

My kid's public school requires any shorts or skirts come to the kid's knees. They don't want bare butts on seats. And shirts must cover chest and shoulders, and reach at least to the waist of their pants, skirt, or shorts. It's refreshing.

The Nike pro shorts and lululemon are popular with most girls in my kids schools right now but I don’t remember a time when teen girls weren’t wearing short shorts. I remember briefly in high school , maybe in 2005/06 Bermuda shorts were popular but everyone still wore the short shorts as well.

It's at the same time both modest (the sweatshirts aren't form fitting at all)...and like wearing a very short dress at the same time.

I assume there are shorts underneath.

That's the exact look. It's hot outside but they're wearing oversized sweatshirts with booty shorts, so it looks like they're out in public naked from the waist down.

Don’t understand the reasoning of its hot outside and somehow wearing short shorts helps with the heat. People in middle East countries cover their entire bodies with long white cloaks or dresses because its so freaking hot. Its to prevent sunburn and keep cool at the same time. People in the west somehow think that not wearing clothes or wearing minimal clothes is better. The logic makes no sense. My entire arms and legs burn when I go outside in the summer heat. It would make much more sense to cover up the exposed skin with some light reflecting fabric instead of getting burned. But you do you.

I'm pretty modest but I can't stand to wear long sleeves or pants when it's hot. I have traveled through the middle east many times and I've dressed like them and been miserable. My favorite thing to wear when it's hot is a tank top dress that comes to mid thigh or maybe a little lower. I can still move but I don't sweat nonstop. Many of us don't burn like you must. My arms and legs only burn after a whole day at the beach. I do wear hats though to protect my face always.

I think they just look shorter and more s#utty than when we wore them because girls these days are much bigger than we were. Larger girls make shorts look more voluptuous. And I understand this problem since I was always top heavy and couldn't wear the same shirts my friends did without looking like a playboy bunny.
