Agree. The left lane is a passing lane, not a cruising lane. People are supposed to treat it like they would if they were on a single lane road. Only get over to pass, and then move back into right lane. It also means accelerating enough to pass the car on the right - so don't take 15 miles to pass the car on the right. |

This isn’t entirely true. Some DMV highways have left exits so drivers do need to get in that left lane in anticipation of their exit. |

Just follow the rules of the road. No one said tailgating is right. But, neither is cruising in the left lane. Don't be that a$$hole that thinks they are "entitled" to cruising in the wrong lane. |

Correct. Which means you get over in a reasonable distance before the exit. It doesn't mean driving for 10 miles in the left lane. |

And it means the drivers driving fast in the left lane should expect to have to deal with slower vehicles in the few miles before that exit, yes? A little consideration from/for everyone. |

No, not "in the few miles". More like the last 1/2 to 1/4 of a mile before the exit. Follow the law: Drivers proceeding slower than the normal speed of traffic must drive in the right. Slower moving vehicles traveling in the left lane must yield to faster traffic. The driver of an overtaken vehicle shall give way to the right in favor of the overtaking vehicle. Va. St. § 46.2-802 Va. St. § 46.2-804 Va. St. § 46.2-842 Va. St. § 46.2-803.1 Va. St. § 46.2-842.1 All states have “Keep Right Laws” which require vehicles travelling slower than the normal speed of traffic (defined differently in each state) to travel in the furthest right lane. A growing number of states, however, designate the far-left lane as a “passing only” lane, making it illegal to travel in that lane other than to pass another vehicle. Driving in the left lane for anything other than passing is not only illegal in a growing number of states, its unsafe and results in thousands of accidents annually, according to a study by the Traffic Operations & Safety Laboratory within the engineering department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. When looking for deeper pockets or additional defendants in automobile collision litigation, don’t look past the driver who may have put the entire sequence of events into action. If a driver is parked in the left lane on a four-lane highway and is not passing someone or making a left turn, he or she is breaking the law in a majority of states and can be ticketed. |

I don’t misuse the left lane but when I see someone who is doing that, I don’t really care because I am never in a mad rush to pass every car I can. I also don’t tailgate but when I see someone tailgating another car, I definitely care. I think to myself, “that angry impatient a$$hole is making the road more dangerous for everyone.” The tailgater is the much bigger assh0le. You can only control your own actions. |
