Stop tailgating me!

Did tailgating help the woman drive faster?

It did not. However, I am fairly certain she was aware of my frustration, and that of several other cars who were actually honking, so perhaps she will come to realize that she is a menace. It is true that overly aggressive drivers cause accidents, but overly cautious ones aren't much better.

I guess you showed her ... to literally zero effect. Proud of yourself?

Get out of the left lane completely on all roads, and don't go >5mph below the limit in the right lane.

First of all, stop blaming the driver in front of you. I’ve been tailgated in the far right-hand lane going at or above the speed limit.

Secondly, tailgating me will make me go slower, not faster. I will want more room between me and the car ahead of me so that if they do something unexpected I have more reaction time so that I can hopefully avoid slamming on my brakes and getting rear-ended by my tailgater. Moreover, if my tailgater does rear-end me, I want the extra room in front of me to hopefully avoid a chain reaction where I get pushed into the car in front.

Look in your rear view mirror, OP. Is there a lot of space in front of you, and a line of cars behind you?

If so, you are the problem. Don't lead parades.

I am, actually. Like I said, drivers like that should not be on the road. If you cannot drive the speed limit under normal conditions, give up your keys. Frankly, authorities need to do more to monitor the driving skills of the elderly and infirm.

She probably slowed down on purpose to account for your unsafe following distance.

You don’t need to be in the left lane for more than a mile for a left exit. Not even that. Say, 1/2 mile.

What if I'm driving the speed limit on a one lane residential street? This is when I get tailgated by impatient commuters.

Then you go 5 under, lol

Again, she was going 15 in a 25. There was no slowing down. I caught up to her going that speed, as did a long line of us. If a driver truly believes that she must slow down to 15 on a normal road to go safely, she should not be driving.

This. If you have a left exit, and you don't feel comfortable going at "left lane" speeds, you should be in the left lane for one mile - MAX. 1/2 is plenty, in moving traffic. I think a lot of people just don't know how to drive - they don't know how to check their mirrors to gauge flow of traffic. You should be checking your mirrors every couple of seconds all the time.

If you are driving slower than the rest of the traffic in the left lane, you need to move over. You will just as easily cause an accident as someone who is tailgating you.

But you didn't fix anything. Your actions did not change her behavior. You just added to the overall negativity because you were, what, 90 seconds delayed? Grow up.

I’ll take your word for it. I’ve had people up my *ss bc I don’t exceed 25 on local roads, especially when there are kids walking to school. If they are really close, I slow down even further bc F them.

A lot of people don't know that they should not be cruising in the left lane on ANY road (at least in VA). Not just highways. If it's a multilane road, the left lane is for passing. Don't cruise in it at the speed limit (or below) if you're turning in 3 miles.
